In this year’s season series between the Orioles and Rangers Josh Hamilton and Adrian Beltre had multi-multi home run performances against the O’s. The Rangers dominance of the Orioles wasn’t just leaving the park, the total tally of overall runs in the six games played were 48 to 21 runs in favor of Texas. Hamilton hit four home runs on May 8th this season versus the O’s and Beltre hit three tonight as the O’s get slammed by the Rangers 12-3. Beltre is the 4th player in modern baseball history to have three home runs in both a single regular season game and a postseason game (Albert Pujols, George Brett, Reggie Jackson,….Babe Ruth- not modern).
Tommy Hunter started this game for the O’s and gave up two of Beltre’s three homers tonight and four in game total. Hunter is currently leading both the American League and Major League Baseball this season in home runs given up with 32. Even though Hunter came into this game with a 14-4 record when pitching in Arlington with a 3.58 ERA, most if not all of that came from when he was playing with Texas. He was acquired in a trade last season that brought Chris Davis to Baltimore as well and sent reliever Koji Uehara to Texas, Uehara (DL) and Davis (not in lineup) did not play in this game, and the O’s now wished that Hunter never took the mound.
Hunter pitched three innings gave up eight hits, eight runs and two walks as he suffered his eighth loss of the season. Rangers starter Derek Holland came into this game with his last three starts ending in no decisions, and the win tonight breaks that streak. His last win before tonight came almost a month ago on July 25th, and tonight he went seven innings, gave up five hits, three runs, two walks, and five strikeouts. He is now 3-1 in his career against the O’s.
The O’s were hampered by the fact that only one player tonight, Nick Markakis, drove in all of Baltimore’s three runs. Although they might have lost ground to the other Wild Card contenders they held steady with the division leading Yankees who also lost tonight. The Orioles are off tomorrow but then face Toronto in a three game home stand starting Friday.
