Cornerback a new area of concern
Posted By Matthew Stapleton On Aug 25 2012 @ 3:12 pm In New York Giants | No Comments
The New York Giants came into 2012 stacked at cornerback. They had veteran Corey Webster solidifying his spot on the outside. Terrell Thomas was coming back from injury to reclaim his spot as a stop cornerback. Last year’s first round draft pick Prince Amukamara was looking to get a good amount of work with offseason workouts and preseason playing time. Jayron Hosley, this year’s third round pick, has looked like a star throughout the preseason.
If Prince Amukamara doesn’t recover from a high ankle sprain in time for the regular season opener against the Cowboys on September 5th, who starts opposite Corey Webster?
So where do they go from here?
Rookie Jayron Hosley had a strong performance against the New York Jets last week, but ended the game with a turf toe injury and did not play against the Chicago Bears. Bruce Johnson took over for Amukamara against the Bears and was immediately targeted. Johnson botched his zone coverage against Brandon Marshall and gave up a 21 yard touchdown.
Michael Coe and Justrin Tyron are other candidates who could start if Amukamara does miss time. The Giants are hoping he can get healthy in time, but high ankle sprains usually take several weeks to recover from. Hopefully Hosley, who has been outstanding this preseason, can recover from turf toe in time for the opener if Amukamara cannot make it back in time.
