Texas Longhorns opens the season against Wyoming at home. It looks like Texas will use two quarterbacks, David Ash and Case McCoy. I for one do not believe in a dual quarterback system. I cannot recall the last time a College or Professional team won a National Championship or Super Bowl with two quarterbacks. I have seen it tried with the Cowboys in the 70’s between Roger Staubach and Clint Longley. It didn’t work to well, Longley left the team doing the season after taking a cheap shot at Roger. Longhorns tried it in the 2000’s with Young and Simms which worked out okay. But, when Vince operated the offense himself the next year results were a National Championship and runner-up to the Heisman.
There are a lot of reasons dual quarterback systems fail to work. One is consistency, another is leadership, and most important is confidence. As, a Quarterback they must gain confidence of the players and Coaches. Must show that they can execute the offense effectively to produce wins. Game preparation can become an issue because of the different weaknesses and strengths of each Quarterback. Personally, that position should be settled in the spring season. It will give the offensive staff more time to game plan for the upcoming season.
David Ash is a big quarterback from the State of Texas. David played at Belton High School a small Central Texas community. One former product of Belton High School is Ricky Sanders who played for the Super Bowl winning Redskins. Ash, led his high school team to the playoffs his Junior year. And his senior year received all-state honors, as a punter and quarterback. As, a freshmen at Texas he played in all 13 games and started six. Led his team to a win in the holiday bowl.
From watching him play, he is a very good quarterback. He is a young Quarterback which needs to learn the college game. College defenses are fast and come with plenty of schemes. He stands in the pocket well, good throwing motion and smart. David, runs the option offense well. He needs to work on throwing the long ball. He has a tendency to lock on to one receiver. I believe that is one of the reasons, he threw a high number of interceptions in crucial games. He had two interceptions in the Red River game last year, which Texas lost .
Texas Quarterbacks are measured on wins and loses against our Red River rival. So, far Ash is 0-1 against Oklahoma. For him to reach the statue of Young and Applewhite, he is gonna have to beat OU more than once.
