After multiple seasons of off the field issues the Dallas Cowboys finally have a set of rules for Dez Bryant. With the most recent incident involving Bryant allegedly hitting his mother, there were reports that owner, Jerry Jones, was becoming growingly frustrated and angry with the young and very talented receiver. So that is probably why it was Bryant himself who sought out help to create a system of checks and balances for himself, and it was Bryant along with a reported “support group” who have come up with these new guidelines.
The rules are reported to be a midnight curfew, a ban on alcohol and strip clubs, weekly counseling, and a security detail who will taxi him around to games, practices and events. Throughout the media some have asked or implied that these rules are a sort of admission of guilt or blame, which Jerry Jones in particular has taken offense to. The bottom line for most should be that Bryant will finally have some much needed structure in his life that most anyone would need when coming to the kind of money a star athlete makes. Let’s face it, most of us, were we to come into pro athlete type money and a lack of things to do, would end up doing all sorts of outlandish things. Though we might not have the same types of problems, without walls that’s just what people do. Now that certainly doesn’t excuse the type of behavior that Dez has exhibited, but it should present some semblance of perspective.
In an NFL that is cracking down more and more on players who are getting into trouble and creating a bad image, it should be a viewed as a positive sign that Dez is not only getting help, but that he is the one who initiated it. Which means this is his choice and he is motivated to follow through, rather than him simply submitting to some handed down punishment. There is no excusing his actions up to this point, but for a player poised to emerge as one of the more talented players at his position this year, it’s a step in the right direction.
