Jets Trade Wayne Hunter To Rams

The Jets have scored as many touchdowns this preseason as I have and guess what…I haven’t even stepped foot on a field.
Last week the team announced tackle Wayne Hunter had been replaced by Austin Howard in the starting lineup. Originally they were planning on using Hunter as a sixth lineman off the bench. After a rough outing against the Panthers, in which he gave up a sack, that thought process changed.
The Jets agreed to a deal that will send Hunter to the St. Louis Rams in exchange for former second overall pick Jason Smith. Smith, who was picked by the Rams back in 2009, has had an injury filled career. After being highly touted he’s played in 29 games over the past three seasons.
New York hopes he can fill the spot Hunter left by coming off the bench when called on. At 6’5″ and 308 pounds there’s no doubt he has size. The question is how durable will he be? In addition, the Jets will be paying an extra $1.55 million as a result of the trade due to the guaranteed money in Smith’s contract.
It’s extremely evident the Jets have problems on offense. Now it’s only the preseason, but you have to wonder if this trade was in someways an act of desperation.
The team just needs to take a deep breath and focus on what needs to be fixed. No need to push the panic button just yet.
