Badgers hold on for season opener win

As a Badger fan this was one season opener that was a little to close for comfort at times.  I found myself actually worried when I watched the Badgers 13 point halftime lead slip away. Not only was Wisconsin taking the field with a new QB in Danny O’Brian but this was also the debut of new offensive coordinator, Matt Canada who replaced Paul Chryst, now the head coach at Pittsburgh.

Wisconsin has had great success in past seasons with running an offense that punishes other teams with a high powered ground game and an exciting passing game lead by athletic QB’s. The passing and running games were the two biggest questions coming into the game on Saturday against a top FCS school in Northern Iowa.

Starting Running Back Montee Ball had suffered a concussion in an early morning assault about a month before the season started resulting in him missing some of fall camp. If there were any questions surrounding how Montee Ball would play following that concussion,  he answered them; 120 yards rushing and a TD. Junior, James White had 9 carries for 47 yards.

Gone from last year is Russell Wilson, now the Seattle Seahawks starting quarterback. In, is transfer QB Danny O’Brian who looked good in Wisconsin’s first post Russell Wilson era. The Maryland transfer QB completed 19/23 passes for 219 yards and 2 TD to Jared Abbrederis.

Although Wisconsin got off to a slow start they got the win and will hopefully know what needs to be corrected before next weeks game. Badger fans have grown accustom to 30+ point wins in the early season games, but Wisconsin is happy with getting a win anyway they can. Their next game will be September 8 at Oregon State.
