Mississippi State came into the 2012 season with high expectations and wanted to get off to a fast start to begin their fall campaign. It didn’t take long for the Bulldogs to flex their muscles on Saturday night as Dan Mullen’s team scored early and often en route to a 56-9 win over the Tigers of Jackson State at Davis Wade Stadium – Scott Field in Starkvile, MS.
Tyler Russell, now entrenched as the starter at quarterback was a modest 15 of 23 for 175 yards and two touchdowns as he distributed the ball around the park to several different receivers while in the game.
Ladarius Perkins also was starting his first game as the now “feature” running back and finished with 50 yards on 8 carries and scored two touchdowns.
All in all the Bulldogs racked up 377 total yards and Mullen was able to see a lot of younger players hit the field.
We’ve got a lot of things we can go over and teach off this film out of this game,” head coach Dan Mullen said. ”We got a lot of guys some reps, got a lot of guys experience, a lot of guys played football for the first time. And there’s a little bit of everything we can go through and teach this week, and hopefully see a great improvement in our team between now and next Saturday’s SEC kickoff game.”
The defense also played very well throughout the night, limiting Jackson State to just 265 yards of total offense and 16 first downs.
The Bulldogs defense scored twice on the night – that being a 52 yard interception return by Darius Slay and a 22 yard return by Matthew Wells.
For the Tigers, E.J. Drewery hauled in a 9-yard pass in the second quarter for the Tigers’ lone touchdown of the game.
The Bulldogs will now turn their attention to their SEC opener next week as they will prepare to entertain the Auburn Tigers next Saturday for the bloody marry game at 11 AM CST which can be seen on ESPN.
