Gonzalez Busts Out of Slump, Hits Walk-Off Double To Lift Dodgers Over Diamondbacks

In his first at-bat as a Dodger last week, Adrian Gonzalez hit the second pitch he saw into the right field stands for a three-run home run. It was the stuff movies were made of, in the land of Hollywood, no less. The fans went crazy and we all thought that the home runs would follow and the the runs would be overflowing. Times were good, indeed. However, that didn’t last long. Gonzalez, and the Dodger offense, struggled mightily over the next eight games, with the Dodgers losing five of them and falling further behind the first place San Francisco Giants. But Gonzalez came alive hitting a walk-off, two-run double to lift the Dodgers to a 5-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Dodger Stadium.
Ronald Belisario (4-1) picked up the victory for the Dodgers, while Diamondbacks closer J.J. Putz (1-5) suffered the loss and his fourth blown save of the year. It was a crucial victory for the Dodgers, knowing that the Giants had won earlier in the day and they were a mere two outs away from falling five and a half games behind their rivals from the north. The Dodgers did, however, gain ground on their pursuit of the second wildcard, as both the St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates lost. They trail the Cardinals by only a half-game for the second wildcard.
Things started off well for the Dodgers as Matt Kemp deposited a Wade Miley fastball into the right field bleachers, just out of the reach of a leaping Justin Upton, putting the Dodgers up 1-0. However, the Diamondbacks immediately responded as third baseman John McDonald lined a home run to left field off of Dodgers starter Chris Capuano. The Diamondbacks padded their lead in the fourth inning. With two out, first baseman Paul Goldschmidt hit a soft liner that just got past second baseman Mark Ellis for a base hit. Miguel Montero then followed with a booming shot to right field for a home run, giving the Diamondbacks a 3-1 lead.
The Dodgers offense looked lost and hopeless yet again, sputtering away inning after inning. They inched closer in the sixth inning. After Kemp drew a one-out walk, Hanley Ramirez advanced him to third with a double to left, and then scored on a ground-out by Andre Ethier. The Diamondbacks got the run back in the seventh inning off reliever Shawn Tolleson. Goldschmidt and Montero led off with singles and were sacrificed to third and second by Chris Johnson. John McDonald then followed with 35-foot single to first base, scoring Goldschmidt and giving the Diamondbacks a 4-2 lead. The Dodgers got a run back in their half of the seventh as Shane Victorino drove in A.J. Ellis with a single to center.
That set the stage for the ninth inning dramatics by Gonzalez. With one out, Ellis singled to left and Victorino followed with a walk. Gonzalez then followed, hitting an 0-2 pitch into the right field corner that scored both Ellis and Victorino, giving the Dodgers a much needed victory.
