2012—Possible curtain close for Andy Reid and Other(s)?

Last week Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeff Lurie made no guarantees about the future of head coach Andy Reid.  Lurie said of last seasons 8-8 performance by the Eagles, “I think we all thought we were better than 8-8 and we weren’t,” Lurie went on to say, “I expect a substantially improved team.”  Having had the highest of expectations in the 2011 (Dream Team) and failing to make the playoffs, Andy Reid and company have their work cut out for them in 2012 if they have any hopes of keeping this unit intact, starting with the Coach.

This off-season has been a difficult one for Andy Reid. After a poor season in 2011 and being on the hot seat all off-season, Reid lost his son Garrett at the beginning of training camp, a tragedy that shocked the entire Eagles organization. The Team rallied around Reid and his family as did the Eagles front office. But as we all know of the NFL, it is a business first and foremost.

As for Reid’s response to Lurie’s comments, he shrugged them off, saying “I know the business; I’m not worried about that stuff.” Reid certainly does not have to be worried much about unemployment. Whether he returns as the Eagles head coach in 2013 or not, I can’t imagine a coach with his resume not having at the minimum several coordinator jobs waiting.

However, the odd man out in this situation could be Eagles quarterback Michael Vick. 2012 will be Vick’s third year as the starter for the Eagles. Like Reid, this could be a make or break year for Vick. He has been plagued with injuries the past few seasons. If this year doesn’t prove to be a substantially better season for Vick, look for both Reid and Vick to be sent packing. As it plays in my eyes and the eyes of many, Vick and Reid are a packaged deal. Vick’s play will determine how successful the Eagles are, which will ultimately decide Reid’s future in the city of brotherly love.

Much sympathy goes out to the Reid family for their loss and may their son rest in piece. As it pertains to football, Andy Reid certainly deserves to be in the hot seat. The NFL is very much a “what have you done for my lately” league and lately (2010 and 2011) Reid’s eagles have been ousted from the playoffs in the divisional round and in 2010 ousted from the playoffs entirely.

There is too much talent on this team for another year like 2011 to occur. Vick has been paid Superbowl caliber quarterback money and its time for him to lead the team to their first championship. Andy Reid saved Vick’s career by signing him when his future was uncertain, It looks like it will be Vick’s turn to return the favor.

As one of the most respected and successful coaches in the NFL during his tenure as Eagles head coach, Andy Reid is more than capable of righting the ship.  As hard as it is for me to say (as a New York Giant Fan), look for the Eagles to bounce back in a big way in 2012. As much pleasure as it would give me to do so, betting against Andy Reid just doesn’t seem smart when his back against the ropes.
