O’s blow opportunity to sweep Toronto, and to maintain 1st place position

Tonight the Orioles attempted to break the tie with the Yankees for 1st place in the AL East but failed due to a 6-4 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. The Yankees won in their game in Tampa Bay tonight 6-4 to add on more bad news for the O’s, as well to take back sole possession of the AL East. Toronto broke a four game losing streak tonight after being shutout the first two games, avoiding the sweep.
The Rogers Centre has never been a lucky or pleasant place for the O’s to play in because in their last 42 games played there the O’s have gone 9-33 which certainly showed tonight. The Blue Jays batted around the Orioles in the 7th inning, and the O’s used three pitchers total in that inning. Orioles pitcher Miguel Gonzalez who was 3-1 with a 1.91 ERA in August did not start off the month of September well. Gonzalez pitched six and one-third innings giving up seven hits and five runs as he earned the loss in his first Toronto start.
Baltimore’s Chris Davis, who came into this game batting .429 (18-42) with 7 home runs 12 RBI’s against Toronto this season went 0-3 with three strikeouts. The top three batters in the lineup tonight (Markakis, Hardy, and McLouth) went a cominbed 0-10 in the game. Baltimore batters struckout ten times in this game which makes them look like the O’s of the past or of earlier this season.
Even with this loss and the Yankees win the fans should not worry or make a big deal about it because the Orioles next series starts tomorrow 8/6 and it is against the Yankees which will be four games at Camden Yards. For the first game the O’s will send Jason Hammel, who is back from the DL, to the mound tomorrow, Hammel hasn’t pitched since July 13th after his knee surgery. The O’s are now one game out of 1st in the AL East and are still in the second Wild Card spot. After clawing back to become tied with the Yankees for first and now becoming one game back, these upcoming four games facing the Yanks are important and crucial for the O’s to win.
