Dirty Bird Blog: A Perfect Summer Month

The Montreal Alouettes went undefeated in August by capping off the month with a thrilling 30-25 win over the B.C. Lions this past Friday.  I was only able to catch the ending of the game live due to transportation issues. But I arrived in plenty of time to see Brandon Whitaker’s third touchdown of the game, as well as the great defensive stand to end the game and seal the Als’ sixth win of the season.

Anthony Calvillo had his usual incredible game, passing for over 300 yards for the 8th straight game. That feat set yet another CFL record, surpassing Doug Flutie’s mark of 7 straight games. Not bad for the “old man” of 40 years who’s supposed to be washed up and have his best days behind him.

One of my fellow Alouettes fans had suggested earlier this season that maybe the Als should part ways with Brian Bratton. I felt that was such a ridiculous statement as while the attention goes to Jamel Richardson & S.J. Green when it comes to WRs, it’s Bratton who slips under the radar and makes those outstanding deep plays from AC. Thankfully, the fans don’t make personnel moves as Bratton would be a star on ANY team in the CFL.

And as usual and what I feel is the true blueprint for success for the Alouettes, Brandon Whitaker was the workhorse that dragged this team to victory. When B-Whit gets touches (and touchdowns!), this team wins. His work ethic is second to none and he always has a positive outlook. If this guy has a bad day, it must be during the off-season. On game days, he shines on and off the field.

And much like Whitaker was waiting in the wings of Avon Cobourne, Victor Anderson is making sure that he is not forgotten as well, scoring a touchdown as well. I had a chance to speak with him after the game and much like B-Whit, Victor carries himself very well. He remains humble and ready for the opportunity when it presents itself.

With this fourth straight win, the Alouettes now must travel to Vancouver to a stadium that has never been kind to them; since 2000, the Alouettes have never tasted victory at B.C. Place. Their lone B.C.-based win in the 21st century came at the makeshift Empire Field, so while the Als have proven they can win on the Left Coast, the vaunted dome in Vancouver still remains a dreaded place to play.

Further complicating matters is the fact that despite the win, the Lions are still a dangerous team this season. Travis Lulay was still able to give the Alouettes plenty of fits and their defense remains the class of the league. Montreal will be in tough to win back-to-back games against this team. If they can pull it off, they will making a case to regain the title of “beasts of the CFL” that they held in 2009/2010.

It may or may not make a difference in its final result, but the game is being played this Saturday at 1pm PST (That’s 4pm for us!). Normally the games are played at night, which can wreck havoc on the sleep schedule of the teams coming from the Eastern part of Canada. Perhaps without having to adjust too much to a 3 hour time difference, the Alouettes won’t be so jet-lagged.

Personally, I am pleased that I won’t be forcing myself to stay awake until 1am to watch the entire game. It’s my sincere hope that the Alouettes win and I can go out afterwards to celebrate at a reasonable time!

As the leagues chugs along towards the 100th Grey Cup in Toronto, football fans can get themselves fired up with the official Grey Cup tour that will go cross-country starting this Sunday in Vancouver and ending at the Grey Cup game itself.

A VIA train has been decorated with football in mind and will travel across this great land, stopping in many Canadian cities along the way to help promote this league and it’s history. Be sure to check out their web site [1] to find out when they will be coming your way.

Enjoy the game on Saturday, whether you watch it at home or will actually brave the orange & black crowds in Van City. Be sure to check my Twitter feed [2] for game tweets & last minute news.
