The Noles had little competition facing Murray State last weekend scoring more in the first quarter than the Racers scored the whole game. It’s safe to say that the sixth ranked Seminoles shouldn’t face any turbulence playing Savannah State this Saturday.
Expected to have one of the country’s top defenses, Florida State faced a drawback after it was announced that star defensive end Brandon Jenkins would miss the rest of the season with a foot injury. Luckily for head coach Jimbo Fisher, starting defensive tackle Anthony McCloud could possibly be making his season debut after sitting out last weeks game with a pectoral injury.
Savannah State, a struggling Football Championship Subdivision program, has only two wins in the last two seasons. The Tigers were trampled on by No. 19 Oklahoma State last Saturday losing 84-0. “I have a problem, personally, saying OK we’re going to win this game by a bunch of points,” Fisher said. “We don’t want to ever embarrass anybody or anything of that nature.”
Originally Florida State was supposed to play against West Virginia in a highly awaited game, but the Mountaineers backed out of the matchup earlier this year. As a West Virginia native Fisher expressed his disappointment when the Mountaineers backed out of their agreement after making the transition from the Bis East to the Big 12 Conference. “They had to do when they had to do,” Fisher said. “That would’ve been a great ball game. That’s always been a little rivalry.”
Savannah State accepted Florida State’s $475,00 guarantee to fill in for the Mountaineers.
The Seminoles are favored for this Saturday’s matchup. Fisher admitted that it’s especially more difficult to assess players game performance in match ups where they are heavy favorites.
“Hopefully we do get better,” Fisher said. “I hope that we will continue to grow each week.”
Quarterback EJ Manuel said the Seminoles have plenty of room for improvement regardless of the opponent.
“We’re not going to look down on them because they lost by 84,” Manuel said. “They just got embarrassed. They want to come here and do something about it.”
