Ogletree Emerges as the Cowboys Open the Season With a Win

It was a thrilling opener for the NFL, and one in which the Cowboys came away with an impromptu victory over the Super Bowl champion New York Giants. Especially while many in the country felt the Cowboys were outmatched (guilty myself).

Behind a breakout performance from an unlikely source, 4th year wide out Kevin Ogletree, who had 8 receptions for 114 yards and 2 TDs. Ogletree took advantage of a depleted group of Giant corners, Michael Coe and Justin Tryon. He looked remarkably like Laurent Robinson did last season at the WR3 position, running crisp routes and reacting well during broken plays. He will be on the tips of everyone’s tongue this next week leading up to the Cowboys’ Week 2 game in Seattle.

Tony Romo came up big on the big stage as well, throwing for an efficient 22-29 completions, 307 yards, and 3 TDs. After a shaky start to the game, and obvious trouble along the O-line, Romo settled in and took control of the game, surgically picking apart the Giants secondary. This is clearly a “show me” year for Romo, and after this first game he has left his critics with something to chew on. However, improvements must be made to the O-line, as he will not be able to run around and make the plays he did against the Giants in every game without taking some big hits and if Dallas fans have learned nothing over the past few seasons it’s that Romo is pivotal to the offense.

The play of DeMarco Murray is being somewhat overshadowed by the breakout performance of Kevin Ogletree, and it’s probably good for the quiet running back. However, the ability for the Cowboys to have an effective run game made a huge difference for a team that, last year, couldn’t maintain a lead. With Murray the Cowboys can take away chunks of clock time while in the lead. The ability to run the ball, also opens up the Dallas offense which has been too predictable in the past few seasons, where their inability to run and the lack of respect opposing teams gave to the run game hampered the team’s ability to convert on key third down and red zone plays.

It was a great start to the year for the Cowboys and if they can keep their key players healthy and continue to improve on the line, could be series playoff contenders.
