Ash Whooping

The passing game finally showed up.  And the defense played great held New
Mexico scoreless.  The Longhorns started off slowly with just 17 points in the
first half but finished  the game with 45 points.  This just may be a slow
starting team.  For some reason they are not concentrating in the beginning
of the game.  That is something they must fix prior to playing the Oklahoma’s
and West Virginia’s.

The offense moved the ball well.  Started off with a touchdown run by David Ash.  Also scored a touchdown out of the pistol formation lead by freshman J. Gray.   Little concerned about lack of playing time for Malcom Brown.  They used the younger backs in Gray and Johnson   Texas also used the backs more in the passing game.   The offensive line started sluggish.  They just need to be more assertive in the run game.  Personally,  I think this line is more suited for the passing game.

The passing game threw for over two hundred yards.  Magic Davis got on
the score board with a touchdown pass from Ash.  Finally, got a chance to see McCoy.  He played well even threw a touchdown pass to Harris.  Texas also passed more to the tight ends this game.  McCoy handle the offense well in the  4th quarter.  My most valuable player on the offense side would be David Ash.

The defense played better than last week.  Had a little problem with the option in the first half but made proper adjustment at half-time and came out a held New Mexico to zero points.  They also limtied  New Mexico’s rushing and  pretty much shut down the passing game.  I have two picks for most valuable players on the defense side with young Jeffcoat and Q.Diggs.  Early in the game defense had some missed tackles and blown assignments. Again, due to lack of concentration.

Texas special teams played well,  Nick Jordan with his great kickoffs kept the Lobo’s inside the 20.  Just concern about the field goal kickers due to injuries and inexperience.   Texas had a blocked kick.  The return team did good but I think one area could really improve.

Finally, it was great to see Earl Campbell on the field.  I think he is the greatest Longhorn ever played for Texas.  We call him the Tyler Rose.  I had a chance to meet Earl.  He was in town to watch his son participate in a track meet at the Rock(Alamo stadium).  I must say he is one the nicest person I have ever been around.
