Christian Ponder finally got his first win at home, but you wouldn’t have thought so with only 20 seconds left.  The Jaguars had just completed an improbable 39 yard TD pass with just seconds left on the clock.  The fans in the Metrodome(sorry, Mall of America Field) were heading for the exits.  And the Vikings only hope was that Christian Ponder could make a couple of throws, get them in to FG range, and have a rookie kicker(Blair Walsh) make a 50+ yd FG to send the game to overtime.  Let’s just say that I understand the lack of faith.

But on this Sunday, miracles do happen.  Ponder led the team out with 14 seconds to play and the ball on their own 31 yd line.  No problem.  He chucked two balls down the field, the first a completion of 26 yds to Devin Aromashodu, followed by a five yard dump off and only took 12 seconds off the clock.  Then with 2 sec left, rookie kicker Blair Walsh drilled a 55 yard FG that might have been good from 70.  Tie game, MIN 23 JAX 23.  In overtime, the Jags got a steady dose of Adrian Peterson, Walsh kicked another and the Vikings D held the Jaguars to win the game.  Had this been a playoff game, or any Jets game, it would be lengendary already, but it was miraclulous nonetheless.

Unbelieveable ending, however, the beginning didn’t look good at all.  In the first half the Vikings couldn’t do much on either side of the ball.  The defense only surrendered 9 points in the opening half, but Jacksonville converted several 3rd and longs while Minnesota really sputtered on offense, until finally Adrian Peterson finally broke through and scored a TD at the end of the half.

In the second half, the Vikes looked considerably better.  Ponder was spreading the ball around, ultimately hitting seven different targets.  Peterson continued to run hard and looked much more like the AD of old than I expected.  The latter is excellent news for Minnesota and disappointing news for the rest of the teams on their schedule.  The defense also tightened up, but was still suceptible to the little bulldozer that is Maurice Jones-Drew.  MJD, like Peterson, was better than anticipated.

Ok Viking fans, go ahead and make reservations for the Super Bowl!  Only kidding.  This game has the potential to be a great season starter for Minnesota, but that means putting together a good season and that is going to take a lot of work.  For the moment, Minny is a 1st-place team.  1-0 is always better than 0-1.  Losing this game would have been heartbreaking, and the Vikings were only 14 sec away from that, so while everyone should enjoy this, by Tuesday, the Vikings need to turn their attention to the guy they might have drafted if they would have lost one more game last year; Andrew Luck.
