Week 1 Recap: Philadelphia Eagles @ Cleveland Browns

The Philadelphia Eagles won their season opening game against the Cleveland Browns Sunday but after the victory not much was to be celebrated about their performance. The Eagles beat the browns 17-16 in a nail bitter that saw both quarterbacks play extremely poor. The Browns rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden finished his day 12-35 for 118 yards and 4 interceptions. Michael Vick played poorly also, completing only 29 of his 56 passes for a total of 317 yards and 4 interceptions.  Sunday’s game was suppose to a statement game for the Eagles, instead a day after their win, some people have them finishing last in a tough NFC East division.

Many people, including myself, picked the Eagles to win the NFC East. With all the pressure that is on head coach Any Reid to win this year, in order to keep his job, it seemed to be a certainty that the team would come out and play their best for Reid. Sunday was everything but the Eagles best.  Michael Vick threw four costly interceptions (one for a touchdown) and never got into a good rhythm throwing the football. It took a late four quarter touchdown to put the Browns away.

The Browns should have never been close in this game. Cleveland’s rookie quarterback Weeden had the worst opening weekend statistically of any quarterback in the entire league. He finished the day with a 5.1 QBR and 0-9 with three interceptions on throws over 10 yards. Vick’s turnovers kept the Browns in the game.

The offensive line for the Eagles played rather poorly as well. Vick was under duress for 19 of his dropback passes. The line struggled to keep the pass rush away from Vick.  As the stats will show, when Vick was under pressure Sunday he only completed 1-16 passes for 36 yards.

If the Eagles are going to compete in the NFC East and be relevant this postseason they must play much better than we witnessed yesterday. They have one of the best, if not the best, running backs in the league. Andy Reid might benefit from giving LeSean McCoy more carries and limiting Vick’s passing attempts.

Coach Andy Reid’s future with the organization depends heavily on the outcome of this season. A win is a win and after week two no one will remember this game. If the struggles continue, it might not be crazy to think that Vick could be sidelined for rookie Nick Folks, who played well in the absence of Vick this preseason.

Surely Vick wants to play well for Coach Reid. Andy Reid gave Michael Vick his second shot at an NFL career and Vick wants to do right by him. Last nights game was too close for comfort and the mistakes need to be corrected immediately. The Eagles got the Win which is the most important stat but Vicks performance can’t be sitting to well with teammates, coaches and the front office.
