Florida State vs Wake Forest Game Preview

After beating up on Football Championship Subdivision schools Murray State and Savannah State by a combined 124-3 in the first two weeks of the season, the Seminoles move into the meat of their schedule.

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher finds it hard to believe his team is a three-touchdown favorite in its Atlantic Coast Conference opener against Wake Forest. “Where in the world did that come from?” Fisher asked. “I don’t see all that. We need to worry about how we play and what we do.”

Florida State has won nine of their last 10 games since losing to Wake Forest (35-30) a year ago, a game in which FSU QB E.J. Manuel only played in the second half. The Demon Deacons have won four of the last six games in this matchup. However, the Seminoles won 31-0 in the last meeting in Tallahassee in 2010.

Fisher said he’s particularly worried about Wake Forest’s passing game, led by junior quarterback Tanner Price, who was named ACC offensive back of the week for his performance in a 28-27 win Saturday over North Carolina.

Price, who threw for 233 yards and three touchdowns in last year’s win over the Seminoles, ran for a pair of touchdowns and completed 27 of 38 passes for a career-high 327 yards against the Tar Heels last week.

Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe is known for redshirting many of his first year players. Fisher refers to it as the “Butler Syndrome” in reference to Butlers basketball program who is known for using this tactic.

“As you get older, you get older and smarter. That’s how they play” said Fisher. “A lot of the older guys who have played and play together very well and understand the system, been there and know how to win.”

A win in this year’s meeting will propel Florida State into the following week’s highly-anticipated game with Clemson with a 3-0 record, and a potential matchup between two top-10 teams.

Prediction: Florida State: 34    Wake Forest: 17
