Cardinals Brace Themselves for New England

After Kevin Kolb’s uplifting 4th quarter performance last Sunday and his promotion to temporary starter due to John Skelton’s sprained ankle, his confidence must be higher than it was a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, if there were ever a game to bring him back down to earth an away at New England is the prefect storm. Tom Brady doesn’t lose at home, and if he does it’d never be against someone like Kolb, right? Probably, but lets pump the brakes a little bit.

What if I told you the teams with the two best records over the last 10 games (not counting the playoffs) were the Patriots and the Cardinals? What if I told you that last season Tom Brady threw 3 picks in a losing effort to a Buffalo team that went 6-10? Does anyone remember the Super Bowl champion Giants getting swept by the Redskins? What about the Saint’s high powered offense getting smoked by the lowly Rams less than a year ago? I may be pulling random games out of the air to support my team’s chances, but much crazier things happened last season than a Cardinals upset over the Patriots.

Although I want an upset to happen, and think that it could happen, it’s not going to. I love the Cardinals defense the more I watch it, but it’s hard to believe that Brady won’t hit one of his all-world tight ends for a few big plays down the field, not to mention Brandon Lloyd’s sticky hands. The Cardinal’s defense could play a very solid game and still give up 28 points to the Patriots, putting all of the pressure on our man Kolb to score. Big surprise, all of the weight next Sunday is on the quarterback. The hope is the Cardinals can run the ball effectively (something they couldn’t do last week), keep Brady off the field, and set up Kolb for some easier plays downfield. Almost every team tries to do that aginst the Patriots though, and they’re 27-5 the last two seasons…so yeah good luck with that blueprint.

I don’t want to sound awfully pessimistic but the only way I see the Cardinals pulling this one out is by winning the turnover battle handily or sacking Brady into reitrement. Arizona is a team that struggles to come back from big leads and that’s exactly what New England is capable of doing. If Arizona’s defense can make this a sloppy game it would significanlty increase their chances. There is almost no way Zona wins a shootout in Foxboro, Mass but they could win a slugfest, so pray for rain and maybe even a few replacement-ref calls in our favor. Who am I kidding we’re playing Tom Brady, no calls will go in our favor.

The Cardinals will play hard and compete for the first 2 1/2, 3 quarters, but the Patriots will ultimately pull away, 30-17. Kolb will play better than people expect if his line can keep him upright. No Miss Cleo for this prediction, her lawyers got involved mòn.
