What happened? The 2013 Super Bowl Champions lost to the non-playoffs Arizona Cardinals? Was Tom Brady shot? If Lee Kolb Oswald was high in the bleachers and sniped Brady out, I still would figure the Pats would win with Hoyer calling the plays. But with how the game went, the L is even more unbelievable.
The Patriots won the turn over battle, held Arizona to under 30% on third down, and had almost a hundred yards rushing. They even held Arizona to only 140 passing yards, a pretty big feat in today’s style of game. They had nearly 400 yards of offense, but only found the end zone once. The only thing I can come up with is a scary question to think about. Is Tom Brady getting fragile?
It is no secret how the Giants took Brady’s two Super Bowl rings. They hit him in the mouth. He tasted turf nine times in the last Super Bowl, was sacked five times, and took a safety on the Pats opening play. While Brady had a solid game, he could not get the pass down the field and had only one TD. Arizona replicated this.
They took Brady down. He was sacked four times and was forced into an interception. He was not the Brady of old as he completely missed Gronkowski for the potential tying two point conversation. I am not saying Brady and the Pats are going to crumble, but this cannot be the Pats opponents new recipe for success.
Brady had to throw nearly fifty passes and was just above 60%. This cannot happen. Ridley has to step it up. His 18 carries have to be pushed to 23-25 and his 71 yard have to be closer to 110. He needs to take pressure off Brady or they need to find a new back. The Pats had 17 passing first downs, but only 8 rushing. Although they were behind most of the game, the rushing game has to grow.
Worst of all, the Pats were only 1 for 3 in the redzone. That is fourteen points down the toilet. This contributes to Ridley as well. This is where he has to get those 6-7 hard yards and avoid the rush, and hit, that is definitely coming to Brady in the redzone.
This should not be a preview of things to come. The Pats will get it back together, but one thing is necessary, keep Brady off his back. Do not have him throw fifty times in a game and tell Ridley to step it up or hand it over to Woodhead. Hopefully, this does not hurt them come playoff time.
