When you think of great rivalries, I think of: Mets/Braves, Yankees/Redsoxs, Celtics/Lakers, Cowboys/Niners, Cowboys/Eagles, Steelers/Browns, Evander Holyfield/Mike Tyson, and of course Me/My Uncle Michael..
Yes! The time has come for one of football’s most intense rivalries to take center stage this weekend, as the Dolphins play host to the New York Jets.. Two teams who are history makers and have had some unbelieveable games in the past.
In the list of great rivalries that I mentioned, I put myself in there because everytime the Dolphins (which is my team) plays the Jets; My Uncle Michael and I have the debate on which is the better team. Usually in our 20 year rivalry, we start trash-talking about the upcoming game; a few days before. Now, he started trash-talking SUPER early. How early? 30 MINUTES! I mean it, 30 minutes after the Dolphins whipped the Raiders last Sunday. As you read along, you will see I don’t like the Jets.
It was Sunday 4:30 pm, and my text message goes off basically saying, “Reggie Bush got lucky, 70 points for your fantasy team!!!” “That is ridiculous!!” It was actually 59 in our league and he is on my team.
I replied, “This isn’t uncommon for him, he had plenty of big scoring games last year!”
He has been a huge Jets’ fan all of his life, and is a major Dolphins HATER! He continued basically telling me, “That the Dolphins will SUCK this year and will be lucky to win 4 games!” I am different, I believe the Dolphins will be on the MOST SURPRISING TEAMS in the league. Then, he says, “He is a realist, and that the Jets are much more talented than the Dolphins!” I took the high-road and ended this, by saying, “May the best team win!!” That is my style.
Most people have predicted that the Dolphins will have a terrible year and that the Jets could contend for a playoff spot. It is the other way around in my book. To me, the Jets are like a BAD RECTAL ITCH, that needs to go away!!! Their coach Rex Ryan, is a LOUD-MOUTHED, EGOTISTICAL, PATHETIC version of coaching Legend Bob Knight. Knight symbolized those things except pathetic, but unlike Ryan, he was a BIG-TIME WINNER!!
To quote a few lines from the movie National Lampoon’s Van Wilder, “You know how you get rid of a rectal itch? You scratch it, and then you scratch it some more. Until, you finally have nothing more, than a raw, chafed, possibly infected anal cavity and then it is one. When all you needed from the start, was taked a medicated pad and smother it.”
All little over the top, possibly. But, that is how I feel. This should be a great game. The Dolphins are coming off a week, when they STOMPED a mud hole in the Raiders 35-13 and the group that I called, “The FEARSOME FOURSOME, ARRIVED!!” Reggie Bush, Ryan Tannehill, Brian Hartline and Lamar Miller.
The forementioned Reggie Bush went off: 26 carries (career-high), 172 yards, 2TD’s. He was named AFC’s Offensive Player of the Week. Ryan Tannehill got a few firsts in the game as well: 1st professional win, his 1st TD’s (running and throwing), 1st turnover free game. Brian Hartline had 111 yards on 9 catches. Rookie Lamar Miller made his debut (10 carries, 65 yards, TD).
Sunday, we also mark the return of former coach and current Offensive Cooardinator Tony Sparano and S Yeremiah Bell. Sporano had a very tenuous 4-year coach stint with Miami (2008-2011). He did get the team in 2008 to have an 11-5 record and got to the playoffs. After that, BOOM goes the dynamite!! He had to deal with DIVA receiver Brandon Marshall, inconsistent quarterback play from Chad Henne, and just an overall struggle to gain success. Sparano is known as the INNOVATOR of the wildcat offense and is famous for that. That made the Dolphins unpredictable during his reign.
He now brings that to the Jets, where he has some very talented players such as: RB Shonn Greene, QB’s Mark Sanchez and the people’s champ Tim Tebow. Tebow is the kind of guy who can make that offense work. if done properly. Tebow is a very-gifted athlete who can do multiple things. Line up at QB, Runningback, Tight End and Wide-Receiver. It should be very interesting to see how the Jets use him this week. Tebow is no stranger to South Beach, as he got his 1st victory last year in a comeback overtime victory vs. Miami. Defense Cooardinator Kevin Coyle during team meetings this week, must have INDENTIFIED him as someone to watch out for..
Yeremiah Bell was the best defensive player for the Dolphins over the last 4 years. A tackling machine he was. The Dolphins released him this offseason because he was getting older, and was too expensive. The felt they could replace with someone younger and less expensive. Bell is struggling in Jet land. He has gotten torched a few big plays.
Both teams are 1-1 with each having a lopsided victory. Dolphins last week vs. Raiders, and Jets in Week 1 vs. Bills. Last year, last game of the season, needing a win to keep their playoff chances alive, the Jets came to Miami and lost. Granted that was last year, this is this year!! The Dolphins want to keep that momentum going and knock out the Jets. What a win that would be!! The Jets are favored to win, so a win by Miami would be adding salt to an already infected wound!!!
Keys to victory:
1) Keeping give the ball to Bush early and often. Let him run wild and make the Jets fly home with a bad taste in their mouth. Sprinkle in Lamar Miller for a change of pace.
2) Let Tannehill throw the ball deep. Let’s see the vertical passing game come open. A few nice long passes to Brian Hartline and Devone Bess would make life hard for the Jets.
3) Always a given, but have to mention. NO TURNOVERS on OFFENSE!!!
4) The Dolphins are one of the best defenses in the league against the run. If you don’t believe me, ask Arian Foster and Darren McFadden. They should be able to stop Shonn Greene. The big question is: “Can they stop the Jets passing game?” The Dolphins have a poor secondary, even though they played well in the 2nd half of last week’s game. They need to get pressure on Sanchez and get his head. That could lead to some turnovers which Sanchez has been prone to do.
5) Find Tebow and stop him! He could the be the Jets game-breaker this week. Dansby, Wake and co. better locate him..
I believe Coach Philbin and his staff have a great gameplay to combat the Jets. My prediction as always: Dolphins Win!! Score: 28-13. The FEARSOME FOURSOME dominates again!! Bush runs wild for the 2nd straight week (25 carries, 130 yards, 2TD’s). Tannehill has another solid game (25-35, 250 yards, 2TDs). Hartline is reliable as usual (9 catches, 100 yards, TD). Miller gives Bush a breather (10 carries, 60 yards).
I believe that describes my displeasure for the Jets.
