Cowboys Host the Buccaneers in Home Opener

Is it too early for a must win game? Yeah, probably, but the Cowboys still need to show signs of resilience after a loss to the Seahawks where they were outplayed physically. Greg Schiano an the young Bucs team showed last week that they will not quit until the game is over. Tampa is a young team that is still working out some of their kinks, but are very talented team and this game is not a gimme for the Cowboys by any means.

The Cowboys can pass the ball well, and the Bucs have not shown that they have been able to defend it well. So Dallas will need to establish a more viable passing game than they did last week. The team will also need a more established run game to balance out the passes and avoid being forced into the obvious pass situations that just kill the team.

Probably one of the more important things that the Cowboys offense needs to do is to move past Felix Jones. He just isn’t what the team thought he could be when he was drafted, and Phillip Tanner is a much better player to back up DeMarco Murray. The guy is made of glass, and is just injury prone. When he isn’t injury prone, he is dropping passes or falling over himself while in the open field. There’s no denying Jones’ game breaking speed, but there is more to being a running back in the NFL than just speed alone.

The Cowboys have shown improvement against the pass so far this season, but have regressed against the run. The defense will need to focus on taking away Tamps Bay’s rookie running back Doug Martin, and force quarterback Josh Freeman to throw the ball. Keeping Vincent Jackson contained should help, as Jackson is they type of player who can disappear from a game when he is not getting the looks, much like Dez Bryant.

This is Dallas’ home opener for the season, and after yet another embarrassing loss last week, anything less than a strong outing will not be very well received.
