Randy Moss in the Metrodome. The thought almost brings chills to the spine. He could be playing this game in purple, if not for Brad Childress. Instead, “The Freak” will be in a San Francisco #84 uniform on Sunday in Minneapolis. While thinking back is always fun, looking ahead is more important, and the Vikings must find a way to beat the 49er’s.
San Francisco made it to the NFC Championship game last year and so far looks like the best team in the NFL this year. Meanwhile, Minnesota has had both games come down to the final minutes, and as the sit at 1-1, they could easily be 2-0 or 0-2. Do the Vikings have a chance? Absolutely. They simply have to worry about stopping the SF offense, which is easier said than done.
The 49er’s have a lot of weapons, including Randy Moss. Minnesota needs to worry about Frank Gore and the SF running game, along with Vernon Davis and the air attack. Moss has been productive in limited snaps this season, but I fear and expect a big game from him on Sunday. Randy loves the Metrodome, as well as the fans inside, and I guarantee that there will be plenty of #84 jerseys and signs saluting him in the stadium. That being said, the fans will all want him to lose. The Viking D will have to contain him, but more importantly hold down Gore.
I never thought I’d say this, but Christian Ponder is the key to the Vikings’ offense. AP will get plenty of touches, but Ponder needs to play well for Minnesota to win. Really, all he needs to do is play like he does in the 4th quarter for the entire game. So far the Vikings’ QB has a 118.2 rating in the 4th quarter(6th in the NFL). That’s better than Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and a whole slew of others. If he can play like that in the first three quarters, than the Vikes have a chance.
After the first two weeks, I think most Viking fans would just like to have a win decided before the two minute warning. That however, is probably not how this will play out. Moss will have an impact and Minnesota will probably lose 23-17.
