Brown n Brown

Approxiametly a quarter into the season and Texas is 3 and 0.  They start conference play in one week against Oklahoma State.   I like the fact that this game is played early in the season for weather reason.  It should not be cold and snowy which is not great conditions for a Central Texas team.

I believe the Longhorns  have improved from last years team.  I could see the team starting to play better in the bowl game last year.  The  defense has me concerned.  They are giving up to many big plays and yards.  The poor tackling really has to improve.  Originally, I blame the coaching staff for the poor defensive play but not anymore.  I put this on the players back.  To elimnate poor communication, they need to spend more time in the film room as a group.  I think the tackling issue is all mental.  They are just not concentrating or relying on fundamentals.  I am still not clear on the leader of the defensive group.  I based that on play on the field not just talking a good game off the field.    I realize they are young a still trying to learn the college game.  But that is no excuse because they are too talented to be giving up big plays against teams like Ole Miss and New Mexico.   The linebackers are going to really have to improve going into Big 12 play.    The secondary is going to have to cover better and produce more turnovers.   I think the defensive line is their strong point with future NFL bookends.

The offense is  playing  better.   And the number one reason is the maturity over the year in David Ash.  He is throwing the ball well and just showing great confidence.  Texas has plenty of threats and speed on the offensive side.  My main concern was the offensive line but they have started to play well.  I am glad to see Texas return to the run game, that is what they do best.

I would probably like for them to settle on one running back and platoon less.  I think the best of the four backs is Malcom Brown.   He is probably the best back in the conference.  His running style is unique with a combination of  speed and power.   He takes care of the ball and is healthy  He has excellent vision and balance.  Malcom could contend for the Heisman if given sole duties as the running back.

I am really excited about specials teams.  I enjoy watching Santos cover kickoffs.  It is a plus to keep opponents within the 20 yards line.  I  hope to see more blocked punt form M. Thompson.  I think we will also see more things form the return teams due to the talent and speed of the returners.

Overall, Texas is setting good.  They must go into Stillwater and control that game.  If they expect to win.  The Cowboys has had Texas’ number last few years but I think it will change this year.    A well deserve week off.
