Salute Your Shorts

For the second time this season, Blaine Gabbert connected with Cecil Shorts on a long touchdown with less than a minute left in a dome.

For the first time this season, the Jaguars ended that game with a win. Of course, it wasn’t without the defense making sure every fan stayed until the final play.

But before the 80-yard touchdown, Maurice Jones-Drew made sure to do his part against Indianapolis, which was run for a lot of yards and generally make the Colts wish Blaine threw more during the game. Well, Mularkey made sure that Indianapolis stayed honest and MJD’s tracks paved the way for Shorts long touchdown run.

Defensively, Jacksonville shored things up in the second half, and unlike the first two weeks, there wasn’t as much of a disparity between the time of possession, meaning the defense didn’t stay on the field as long. Indy’s lack of a dynamic rushing game made things a bit easier as well, meaning the Jags could use more players in coverage. A better team could exploit the absence of speed the Jaguars have, and the lack of pressure they put on the QB.

Another area of concern is the Jaguars ability to put together drives long enough to cross to the other side of the field into oppositional territory. The Jaguars had two chances inn the final 4 minutes to close the game out with a few first downs, and only managed three and outs both times.

Against Indy, it barely worked, but if the Jags want to show any progress, they must learn to put together longer drives and complete first downs. It is very concerning because Cincinnati is further along than Indianapolis, and if Jacksonville comes out flat like they did against Houston in Week 2, we will see a repeat (un)performance like the Jags first home game.
