Touchception downs Packers on final play

Touchception downs Packers on final play

There is no getting around what happened last night in the National Football League, absolutely nothing, and it was a travesty. There has never been a finish like this, there never should be, but thanks to commissioner Roger Goodell and Company, it did.

The Green Bay Packers were robbed last night of their second win of the season because of the replacement referees. In all my years of watching sports I have never been one to want to solely blame a loss on the ref’s, but it is hard to say different about the Monday Night Football game which took place last night.

The worst part about the whole situation is it takes away from one of the best defensive games I have seen in my 24 years. The Seattle Seahawks defense may be one of the best in football and the Packers defense sure is showing the world it is not a slouch either, but the thing of it is none of that matters because the night was defined by terrible calls, both ways.

M.D. Jennings possessing the football on the last play of the Packers versus Seahawks game

From the defensive pass interference on defensive back Sam Shields that was clearly perfect coverage, to the questionable roughing the passer by linebacker Eric Walden, to the last call of the game we are watching the NFL brand go from Nike to generic . There is no way to disagree, there is no way after seeing the replay of defensive back M.D. Jennings coming down with the football, no not you Golden Tate, you can think the correct call was made, because it was not.

Another thing which can be taken away from the game last night is Tate is spineless. In the post-game interview when asked if he pushed Shields he stated, “I don’t know what you are talking about.”

That comment right there is unacceptable from a professional athlete. There is conclusive video evidence of Tate extending both arms and shoving Shields over, it cannot be argued in any way, shape or form, it happened.

Lets face the facts though, there is nothing more which can be done, so lets talk about what the Packers can control because there are positives and negatives to how the Packers played and the positives were the defense and the second half.

The Packers have shown their defense is capable of winning games for them after the performance last night. The youth on the defense has been something which has benefited them with strong play from defensive backs Casey Hayward and Jerron McMillian, defensive lineman Jerel Worthy and linebacker Nick Perry.

Shields may have played one of the best games of his career last night as he was constantly targeted, but rose to the challenge. Granted he was called for the pass interference, but we already know it was the wrong call. He was also shoved in the back on the last play, but was in the right position until so. Shields was flying around the field and making positive plays.

Next the offense, the first half was the worst football the Packers had played in about five years. The second half, was much better. It was nice to see the Packers have balance in the offense and actually use running back Cedric Benson. The offense will figure it out and it appears they may have been starting to click in the second half. Things will continue to be sorted out for the offense and they will be fine.

The Packers should have left Seattle 2-1, but instead they are 1-2 as the zebras are now the joke of the zoo, known as the NFL and Goodell is running a poor show.

I’m a Bears fan and was shocked by the terrible calls made by the replacement referees/officials in this game. The Packers should have won this game. The bad call on the last play was the knife in the back, but the defensive interference call on Shields during the Seattle’s second-to-last drive was definitely a factor in the game as well (even though Seattle didn’t score).

Hi Noah, I feel your pain. The good news is…well…the good news is that there may soon be good news, and maybe they’ll wrap this thing up and put it behind us.

Still, officiating (or un-officiating) aside, the Pack must be feeling the heat to step up their game. Maybe the near perfection they displayed on offense last season shouldn’t be expected, but they still have a lot better than they’ve given this year.

I’m not going to suggest that the game should have been out of reach at the end–Seattle is a tough place to play with the 12th man (and even tougher with 13)–but the Pack is better than what we’ve seen in 2012.

Good luck with the season, I hope this game doesn’t cost you a playoff spot…then it really would be a travesty.

I completely agree with both of you folks and I agree also with the comment which I had deleted.
The Packers should have never been in the situation in the first place and I never state in the blog that the ref’s only made poor calls which hurt the Packers, it was bad both ways and I stated so. I also state the Packers put themselves in the position with the poor gameplan in the first half and lack of running game. I never suggested any call other then the final one cost them the game. No where am I whinning or complaining but rather I am giving the opinion from which a Packers blogger should, which is the Packers point of view. If that is too hard to understand then I suggest not posting.
It wasn’t all on the officials, but the biggest play of the game clearly was.
Also a travesty can be considered for a sporting event and once again I never suggested it was worse then a drunk driving accident, if you want to be ridiculous, go ahead, but a simple usage of a word does not make me feel certain events aren’t worse then this.

Noah, I think you did a pretty good job on this piece. I saw the deleted comment, and believe its author confused the word ‘travesty’ with ‘tragedy’. Your usage of the word travesty is proper and well chosen, considering the context in which you used it.
