Pistons Look To Add Two Former Lottery Picks

Last Friday it was announced that the Detroit Pistons had signed former lottery pick Terrence Williams to a non-guaranteed contract and now reports from Monday are saying they are trying to sign free agent point guard Jonny Flynn to a non-guaranteed contract as well.

Terrence Williams was the 11th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft out of Louisville. In his rookie season he averaged 8 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3 assists a game for the Brooklyn (then New Jersey) Nets in 78 games. After clashing with head coach Avery Johnson and constantly breaking team rules he was traded to the Houston Rockets in a three team deal. He was later waived by Houston the next season and was then picked up by the Sacramento Kings where he averaged 9 points a game coming of the bench.

Jonny Flynn was also drafted in the 2009 draft (9th overall) out of Syracuse. He made the All-Rookie second team his rookie year while averaging 13.5 points and 4.4 assists a game while starting in all 81 games he played. His sophomore season saw a sharp decline in all of his stats due to off-season hip surgery which caused him to miss the first month and a half of the season. With the arrival of new point guard Ricky Rubio, Flynn was traded to the Rockets during the 2011 NBA Draft. He was then traded to the Portland Trailblazers in March for Marcus Camby.

Both players will report to Detroit’s training camp on October 1st if their contracts have been settled by then. It’s hard seeing either player making the team with the depth at the guard and forward positions with the addition of rookies Kim English, Kyle Singler, and Kris Middleton to a roster with mainstays like Rodney Stuckey, Tayshaun Prince, Will Bynum, and Austin Daye. But this could still be a good opportunity for Flynn and Williams to impress some other teams who think they are a player or two away.
