Virginia Tech Recap

My apologies for my absence this last week+, but I’m back just in time as the Hokies gear up for their ACC slate.  After losing in the final seconds to Cincinnati Saturday there are more questions than answers in Blacksburg right now.  What started out so promising now has the look of a season that could slip away from Frank Beamer and his coaching staff.

The last-second 27-24 loss at FedEx field outside of D.C. on Saturday showed us both the best and the worst that the Hokies have to offer.  They have play makers on offense but struggle getting them the ball and giving them space to operate.  The defense can get pressure and create mismatches all over the field, but to date they’ve been way too susceptible to the big play.  QB Logan Thomas has all of the physical tools and was touted as the preseason break-out player of the year, but he hasn’t played up to lofty expectations and the offense has struggled because of it.  The offensive line has not come together fast enough, the running backs haven’t made enough plays, and the offensive play calling is now (once again) a point of contention for the Hokie faithful.

Now sitting at 3-2 (still 1-0 in the ACC) the Hokies season is at a crossroad.  With the ACC schedule set to begin (the Hokies travel to 3-2 UNC) now would be the time for this team to string together a few wins.  But how realistic is it that this Hokie team is capable of that?

For years VT has lived on the edge of mediocrity.  Yeah sure they’ve won the ACC and gone to multiple Orange Bowls but very seldom have any of these Hokie teams been considered dominant, or even contenders nationally.  Five weeks into the season and we see the same enigmatic Hokies that have been wildly inconsistent in the past.

With UNC slated for this Saturday and Duke after that these next two weeks are both must-wins for this Hokie team.  We’ve seen signs of good things coming from the offense, but they still can’t run the ball.  The defense remains as competitive as ever, but if they continue to give up big plays and miss crucial tackles they’ll continue to lose close games.

Pitt and Cincyare two solid programs but not world-beaters; Tech should’ve won those games, but they dropped both of them and here we are.  At 3-2 with Clemson, Miami, and FSU following the Duke game we’ll find out exactly what this team is made of in the coming weeks.

Go out and beat UNC handily in their house, take care of Duke at home and go into the Clemson game with some momentum.  Remember, Clemson beat VT twice last year, so it’ll be personal come October 20th.  But before we look ahead to the Tigers let’s get going in the right direction.

Up Next: @ UNC 12:30 Saturday Oct. 6th (preview coming)
