EMU 2012 Homecoming

ROMULUS —- You know what your old Uncle Mel can not believe, he can not believe that the summer days are done for this year and now the fall time of the year is here.

Something else Uncle Mel can not believe it is Homecoming 2012 at Eastern Michigan University. This year Kent State University will be arriving at the friendliest football stadium in the Mid-American Conference, the spacious Rynearson Stadium.

The Eagles are coming into the homecoming game with an overall record of 0-4 and Eastern Michigan University has a league record of 0-1, remember the opening of the season down in Muncie, Indiana and losing to an improved Ball State University.

Uncle Mel is beside himself with lack of offense and the uninspired play of the defense and according to Eastern Michigan University football coach Ron English this style of play is unacceptable.

English is hoping that the bye week will be fruitful with rest and taking care of the nagging bumps and burses. He is also working on a game plan against the Golden Flashes.

“Time for our guys to recover, we played four weeks of football plus a hard camp,” English said. “Our attitude is better. We are at the point start to have the mentality that we want around here. The guys are fired up and to be back in the MAC play.”

So English and his assistant coaches conducted some weight room training, some rabout running and some film work.

“What we did is come in conducted a normal Sunday,” English said about the bye week schedule. “Our players were off Monday. Return Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday we ran and lifting. We practiced at noon on Friday, off on Saturday and practice last night. Now we are right back in the game mode.”

English said the Golden Flashes are going to be a difficult team, he said they are athletic and have team speed and a player that can single-handed change the complexion of the game.

“They are playing very, very well they truly have a weapon with No.1 (Dri Archer) a guy that can really run. He is competitive, he adds a lot to their return game,” English said describing Archer. “So if you choose to kick it to him eventually you will pay the price. So you have to be careful how you handle him.”

English also said that Kent State University football coach Darrell Hazell’s game plan futures Archer like when Reggie Bush played at Southern California back when English was coaching in the Pac-10 Conference.

Archer has accumulated 350 all-purpose yardage and against Ball State University he scored three touchdowns against the Cardinals including a kickoff return for 99 yards and a touchdown.

English is giving his special team squad extra work and working overtime especially with his defense on kickoff return.

“There has been a whole lot of difference in college football, I would say 10-20 percent difference in terms of touchbacks,” English said about the change in the NCAA kicking rule changes. “There is a lot of balls coming out and at some point you are going to have to kick to him. You have to be wise on how often you do that and style of kick. What you want to do is kick the ball out of the end zone.”

There will be no offense changes for the Eagles, sophomore quarterback Tyler Benz will be calling the signals for the Eastern Michigan University and the running backs will remain the same.

When English was asked if there were any changes at running back, he said that tailback Javonti Greene and Dominique Sherrer would still be running the ball.

When asked if there were any changes up on the offensive line English said, “No!”

Eagle fans are hoping that there are some changes for English’s defense, hopefully they will be able to wrap up tackles and keep there leverage.

The key against Kent State University is basic football theory and that the offense must control the ball and keep the clock moving. If the Eagles can limit the time that Archer is on the field then, he will not have a chance to touch the ball.

This Saturday afternoon at Rynearson Stadium the celebration of homecoming will be in full swing with the all the color and pageantry that is associated with the celebration of college football.

English and his football team would like to raise a song up toward the fall air and change the losing of football games into a winning program- that would suprise Uncle Mel.
