Verlander’s pitching leads Tigers to victory

Giving up an early home run usually shakes a pitchers confidence.
That wasn’t the case for Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander as he struck out 11 batters in seven innings after giving up a lead-off homer to A’s outfielder Coco Crisp, leading the Tigers to a victory 3-1. Verlander struck out five of those batters in the span of the sixth and seventh inning.
Miguel Cabrera, baseball’s latest triple crown winner, went hitless on the day, but his groundout brought Austin Jackson back to home as the score became knotted at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning.
It took two more innings for the next score to be put on the board as a Jarrod Parker error brought Omar Infante to home plate. Parker had a decent effort for a rookie pitching his first playoff game with only two earned runs and five strikeouts.
Two more innings later, Alex Avila puts up the last run of the game with a solo home run to bring the score to 3-1. Avila also had another hit earlier in the game. Jose Valverde got the save and Joaquin Benoit got the hold.
Prince Fielder had an unimpressive outing, being held hitless at four at-bats.
The Tigers head into tomorrow’s game with a 1-0 ALDS lead. Doug Fister will face Tommy Milone at Comerica Park at 12:07 PM ET.
