Jose Valverde = B.S. King

Blown save. It pains me to type those words. It hurts to see Valverde destroy what the Tigers offense put together today.

I was literally ready to write a victory post about how the Tigers played well and are going off to the ALCS to face the winner of the Yankees/Orioles series. But now I’m not thanks to Jose Valverde.

First let’s go through the game before we reach Valverde’s moment. Scherzer absolutely torched the A’s with three hits and eight strikeouts in five and a thirds inning. Austin Jackson’s RBI single in the third brought the first run of the game. Prince Fielder finally showed up to play and slugged a solo shot to extend the lead to 2-0. A Stephen Drew RBI single brought the score to 2-1. Avisail Garcia’s pinch hit single brought Omar Infante to home and made the score 3-1.

I had some shivers when Joaquin Benoit had two runners on base with one out in the eighth inning. Benoit did a good job getting those two outs and not letting the runner on base advance. But here comes Jose Valverde in the ninth inning and I was hoping he was the same Jose Valverde I saw last season.

But he failed me and he failed his team.

Valverde gave up hits to Josh Reddick and Josh Donaldson. Then a big RBI double by Seth Smith knotted the game at 3-3. I was hoping Valverde could at least get out of the inning alive and force extra innings. But he put the cherry on the cake by giving up a walk-off RBI single to Coco Crisp. Game over.

Valverde has disappointed me enough this season. I know it was going to be enough nothing like last year’s magical season, but I didn’t think Valverde would sink this low. Now the Tigers have a do or die game tomorrow back in Oakland at 9:37 ET thanks to Valverde. It seems like Valverde left his fingers in the doorway while the Tigers were on their way to closing the door on the A’s season.

The Tigers need you Jose. You can’t blow games like this and expect to help the Tigers make the World Series. So get your stuff together.

Luckily for the Tigers, Verlander’s pitching tomorrow so there’s still hope for the team.
