New York Knicks open preseason vs Wizards

For New Yorkers, it’s no secret that this time of year is primarily about the Yankees and secondarily about the Giants and Jets. But, while everyone is paying all of their attention to the MLB postseason and the NFL, there is another New York team in a different sport that begins their season tonight.
That’s right, the Washington Wizards play host to our New York Knicks, opening the preseason for the team.
With another Knick season comes a second straight year of high expectations, and, as we all know, the expectations of last season’s team resulted in sheer disappointment for us fans. But this year’s team is different, a lot different.
First and foremost, this team’s roster is just better, simply put. Some scoffed at the idea of letting Jeremy Lin go and signing Raymond Felton; I applauded it. Not only is Felton better for the system, but he won’t miss a playoff series when he’s at 85%, that’s for damn sure. Additionally, Carmelo Anthony is in better shape than ever, Amar’e Stoudemire is finally healthy and fresh off an offseason spent with Hakeem Olajuwon, and the team silently upgraded their roster with additions consisting of the defensive specialist Ronnie Brewer and veterans Jason Kidd, Rasheed Wallace, Marcus Camby and Kurt Thomas.
Secondly, this Knick squad will finally get a full training camp and preparation. When Stoudemire and Carmelo were first put together, it was in the middle of the season, and the two literally had no time to gel. Last year, the season and training camps were cut short due to the lockout. This time around, there is finally a full camp and everything that Carmelo and Stoudemire could possibly need to learn how to play together, and my guess is that they will do just that.
Lastly, did anyone see how this team played under Woodson last season? Everyone keeps saying that the Knicks are going to be another 6 or 7 seed, which is just asinine. The truth of the matter is that this team went 18-6 under Mike Woodson last season, a record that was good for best in the East during the stretch. Yes, best in the East. Does this mean they will be the best team in the East this year? No, Miami is still better, but an Atlantic Division crown and Eastern Conference Finals birth (maybe even an NBA Finals birth?) are not out of the question.
The 2012-13 NBA season is finally here, and New York Knicks fans finally have a team that they can say are true contenders.
