What would the Tigers do without Justin Verlander?
In final game of the series, Verlander tossed a complete game shutout while striking out eight batters as the Tigers defeated the A’s 6-0 to prevent a playoff meltdown. Verlander only gave up four runs in the game.
The Tigers showed offensive prowess beginning in the third inning when Austin Jackson’ double brought Omar Infante to home plate in the third inning. A wild pitch by A’s pitcher Jarrod Parker brought Jackson back across home and gave the Tigers a 3-0.
Then the seventh inning came around and the offense began to catch fire which began with a shallow single by Austin Jackson that brought Johnny Peralta back home. Two batters later, Miguel Cabrera was beaned to bring Omar Infante across the bag once again. Fielder’s single afterwards brought Jackson back home. The run seemed over with a weak hit by Delmon Young, but a Stephen Drew error helped Young reach first safely and Quintin Berry score. The Tigers didn’t score anymore that inning, but at that point of the game, it seemed like the A’s playoff hopes were gone.
Hats off to the A’s for playing well and rising to the occasion in game three and game four. They had a magical run into the playoffs as well, but the day belongs to the Tigers as they await to find their foe for the ALDS.
