Another Gray Day for EMU

YPSILANTI —- For a while it looked like a track meet instead of a football game.
There was no lighting with the rain but in the third quarter both teams combined for eight touchdown, keeping the 2,837 rain soaked football fans in side Rynearson Stadium on the edge of their seats.
At the end of the game, Eastern Michigan University football coach Ron English was asked if he had ever seen a third quarter like that and he said, “Probably I’ve been in a lot of games man.”
Eastern Michigan University wearing new uniforms did not change the Eagles’ luck, unfortunately the same results for the Eagles, there is no other shade of gray that can cover another lost, this time to Mid-American Conference West Division rival the University of Toledo. The Rockets defeated the Eagles 52-47, at Rynearson Stadium.
The search for a reliable tailback might be over for Eastern Michigan University football coach Ron English. He started Bronson Hill after watching his brief performance against Kent Sate University last week when he ran for a 68 yard touchdown run.
Against the Rockets, Hill scored three touchdowns, ran 28 times for 283 yards, Hill found out late Friday afternoon that he was going to start the game from a note written by assistant coach Mike Hart.
“He is talented, the thing with (Bronson) Hill is he as fast as anybody in our conference,” English said. “He is up there with all the people that I’ve been around and It is not surprising at all that is what he does in practice.”
The day did not start well for the Eagles. The first play of the first offensive series for Eastern Michigan University quarterback Tyler Benz threw the first pass of the day and Toledo’s defense created the first mistake of the day for the Eagles-an interception by Rocket middle linebacker Dan Molls.
Toledo did not let the turnover go to waste, Rocket quarterback Terrance Owens and running back David Fluellen combined together and pushed the Eagle defense around like swatting away a fly.
Owens finish the day with his best performance of the season, he competed 21 passes out of 32 attempt for 401 yards and three touchdown passes, he was also intercepted two times.
Fluellen carried the ball 24 times for 188 yards and scored two touchdowns for the Rockets.
Eastern Michigan University cornerback Darius Scott tried to tackle Fluellen holding on to his ankles and being dragged on the Rynearson Stadium playing surface.
Toledo finally converted the interception into six points when Owens ran four yards for the score.
Eastern Michigan University defense also created a turnover in the first quarter when Marcell Rose stepped in front of a Owens pass and gave the ball to the Eagle offense a short field.
Benz converted the turnover into a touchdown giving the Eagles a brief lead against the Rockets in the first quarter but that was short. Benz connected with a 10-yard pass to Tyreese Russell for the score
Benz finished with 18 of 27 for 301 yards, two touchdown passes and one interception.
Russell found the end zone again in the third quarter catching a 42-yard pass from Benz scoring his second touchdown of the day.
The third quarter provided plenty of fireworks for but and not for the faint of heart that like a little defense with there football.
Starting the third quarter the Rockets leading the game 21-10, do not know if it was the gray haze of the new uniforms or the gray sky above but both team like getting to the end zone.
A total of eight touchdowns scored by both teams and 55 points scored between the two teams both defense just seemed to collapsed and at the end of the quarter, Toledo led the game 49-37, setting up the fourth quarter.
Eastern Michigan University offense gained a total of 624 yards for the day but the defense gave up a total of 655 yards.
“Because of how the game ended up, I didn’t really feel like it became a momentum game. I felt like it was a game where both teams were going to compete today,” English said. “Nobody could stop anybody, nobody could play defense out there. I don’t know if it was one play but I think more of the stops hurt that that what I am saying by that is you get a couple of stops in there you win the game.”
Next Saturday afternoon, the Eagles will be home at Rynearson Stadium against the United State Military Academy, the kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
