Delmon Young comes up big for Tigers

The Tigers needed a big performance today and they got one from the designated hitter known as Delmon Young. Young smacked three RBIs en route to leading the Tigers to a 6-4 victory in extra innings to give the Tigers an early 1-0 ALDS lead.

Pitcher Doug Fister did a good job of not allowing any runs in 6.1 innings, striking out five batters and giving up six hits. The Tigers got their first run on the board via a Prince Fielder RBI single that brought Austin Jackson across the bag. One batter later, Young comes in and smacks his own RBI single that brought home Miguel Cabrera. Two innings later, Young goes and smacks a long ball to make the score 3-0, but soon after, an Avisail Garcia single brought Johnny Peralta home to bring the score to 4-0.

At this point the game seemed over and the Tigers brought Jose Valverde to close the game, but once again he screwed the Tigers over. Valverde gave up two-run home runs to Ichiro and another to Raul Ibanez in not even a full inning. The score, at that point, was knotted at 4-4. Luckily for the Tigers, Octavio Dotel came to the rescue and retired the last batter to take the game into extra innings.

It took two innings until the Tigers finally put some points on the board. A Delmon Young double brought Miguel Cabrera home and caused an injury to Yankees star shortstop Derek Jeter, who is now out for the series. The injury makes the series a whole lot easier for the Tigers. Later in the inning, Andy Dirks hit an infield single that brought Don Kelly to home plate and made the score ¬†6-4. Drew Smyly came in for the Tigers and didn’t give up a run, giving the Tigers a win at Yankees Stadium.

Be on the lookout for my ALDS preview tomorrow afternoon and catch the Tigers go back for another round of the Yankees at New York at 8:00 PM ET. Hiroki Kuroda and Anibal Sanchez will duel it out on the mound.
