Anibal Sanchez shuts down Yankees

A day after the Tigers gave up four runs in the ninth inning, Anibal Sanchez tossed a three hit shutout in seven innings while striking out seven batters and got the win over the Yankees 3-0.

Yankees pitcher Hiroki Kuroda had an impressive performance as well with 11 strikeouts while giving up five hits, but Kuroda gave up three runs in the span of two innings, giving him the loss.

The first run was on the board after a Delmon Young fielder’s choice groundout brought Quintin Berry back home. Two more runs were added in the eighth inning with an Avisail Garcia single that scored Omar Infante and a Miguel Cabrera single that scored Austin Jackson.

Jose Valverde, as the Tigers have said, did not go in for the close. Instead, Phil Coke pitched two innings and got the credit for the save. Coke only gave up one run and stuck out three batters. Prince Fielder had a disappointing day by going without a hit while striking out twice.

The Tigers take the series back to Motown with a match up between Justin Verlander and Phil Hughes on Tuesday at 8:00 pm ET.
