Undeniable Heat: Southeast Division Preview

Undeniable Heat: Southeast Division Preview

With little in the category of drama, the Southeast Division is an open and shut case regarding the first place winner.

The Miami Heat are the defending champions which would give them the edge anyway but they have watched two division foes become significantly weaker in Atlanta and Orlando.

With Joe Johnson (formerly of the Hawks) and Dwight Howard (formerly of the Magic) out of the division, the Heat can sleep walk to 45 wins and claim another division title.

Still there are teams with hopes of the playoffs in this watered down division and our panel takes a look at how everybody will finish, behind Miami of course:

Steven Jones Picks @Stevenjo5

1.Miami Heat

57-25

2.Atlanta Hawks

44-38

3. Washington Wizards

33-49

4. Orlando Magic

22-60

5. Charlotte Bobcats

19-63

I based my conservative estimate for Miami on periods of adjustment for Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis, potential regressions from Mike Miller and Shane Battier, and Dwyane Wade’s propensity for injury. If all of those variables break Miami’s way, 65 wins aren’t out of the question.

Josh Smith’s contract year could make or break the Hawks’ season, though a healthy Al Horford should be worth a few extra wins. They might not miss Joe Johnson if Lou Williams and Jeff Teague can share the ball without fighting to the death.

The Wizards have finally cleaned house after years of inmates running the asylum, leaving them with a roster higher in sanity but low in franchise-changing talent. John Wall endured a horrific sophomore slump, but his development will determine Washington’s fate.

A frighteningly limited cast of players will leave fans pining for Dwight Howard in Orlando (even last season’s spineless, duplicitous version) by December. Teams featuring Al Harrington as their primary offensive threat have a ghastly track record, as any Knicks fan will gladly tell you.

Prize rookie Michael Kidd-Gilchrist will compete, but will anyone score? The Bobcats will have to play otherworldly defense to make up for what could be an historic lack of easy baskets.

Cal Lee Picks @CLMECCA75

1.Miami Heat

59-23

2.Atlanta Hawks

45-37

3. Washington Wizards

38-44

4. Orlando Magic

31-51

5. Charlotte Bobcats

22-60

Aside from the acquisition of Ray Allen the complexion of the Heat is the same from a year ago. Most of the damage they’ll do will come from racking up wins within the division. The signing of Rashard Lewis is a wild card. He can either be a great 6 man or great 60th man and with exception to Norris Cole, their bench is still suspect. But defense wins championships and that’s the mantra of any team that Spolestra and Riley presides over.

The dynamic between Josh Smith and Joe Johnson wasn’t working, and one of them had to go. ATL’s brass wasn’t going to let Smith walk because they know his worth. Something had to give, so ATL gave Brooklyn a present and in return they got…Anthony Morrow? They went and picked up Louis Williams, a solid 6th man to revive their bench scoring which was abysmal since Jamal Crawford left.

Washington will be led by the 3rd year phenom John Wall. The additions of Nene and Emeka Okafor providing blocks may help their frontcourt scoring and defense but I fear they could also slow down Wall’s ability to score in space. We’ll see if he can adjust but an extra year of Wittman can lead to stability and a much improved team. Hopefully Wittman will implement some Natitude in their basketball team as Davey Johnson did to elevate the Washington Nationals but this team is still has a ways to go before making an impact to the league.

Some of the ugliest divorces aren’t even marital, they are in professional sports, and the drama between Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic couldn’t have been a better example of this during the offseason. While getting rid of their franchise player, they also decided to get rid of their coach, General Manager, the water boy, cooler boy…you get my drift. But the way the Magic are acting they’d probably hire someone right now, just to fire them a week later just to say they did. As for the team, one word… REBUILD

Originally I was going to give the Bobcats the same amount of wins as they had last year (7) even accounting for the additional 16 games missed from last season’s lockout which should tell you how bad I feel this team may be. However, the drafting of Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, the addition of Ben Gordon, and a motivated Kemba Walker lets me know that they somehow believe actually putting the ball into the basket can help win games. They can either eclipse 20 wins or win when we have a solar eclipse either way. Dark Days still ahead in Charlotte.

Warren Shaw Picks @Shawsports

1.Miami Heat

61-21

2.Atlanta Hawks

43-39

3. Washington Wizards

38-44

4. Orlando Magic

 26-56

5. Charlotte Bobcats

19-63

The Heat are going to have this division locked up by All-Star break. Nobody is in their league in the Southeast. They will get to integrate Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis with LeBron, Wade, and Bosh with relative ease as they cruise to the playoffs.

The Hawks will be pressured by Josh Smith trade rumors throughout the season but should feed on the division’s weak competition and rise to just over 40 wins. Smith and Al Horford should have an immense year statistically now that Iso-Joe (Johnson) calls Brooklyn home. Jeff Teague and Lou Williams are solid players but Atlanta is not a real threat in the division or conference.

The Wizards are probably the most improved in the division and that isn’t saying much. Emeka Okafor, Trevor Ariza, and rookie Bradley Beal round out the upgrades. Beal looks NBA ready and when John Wall returns from injury in December, the Wizards will surprise some people.

Orlando has regressed into rebuilding mode in the wake of Dwight Howard’s departure. Aaron Afflalo looks like the new face of the franchise alongside Glen Davis. Yuck!

If you’re looking for mini-guards then look no further than the Bobcats. Ramon Sessions, Ben Gordon, and Kemba Walker are arguably the team’s best players followed by Byron Mullens, Gerald Henderson, and rookie Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Not exactly an awe inspiring collection of “talent”

Logan Williams Picks @LoganWill17

1.Miami Heat

65-17

2.Atlanta Hawks

43-39

3. Washington Wizards

40-42

4. Orlando Magic

26-56

5. Charlotte Bobcats

15-67

Outside of the Miami Heat this has got to be the weakest division in the entire NBA. The loss of Dwight Howard makes it so there is no legitimate threat to Miami’s hopes at a division title and also gives them an easy road for the number one spot in the Eastern Conference. The Miami Heat have the best player on the planet with two perennial all-stars by his side and there is no team in the division that has the scoring ability to keep up with this high-octane scoring machine.

The loss of Joe Johnson gives the Hawks a minimal shot at defeating the Heat and the Magic lost their only advantage in Howard because the center spot is where the Heat are lacking.

The Wizards I feel will take a big step forward with the maturing of John Wall as the leader of the team but they will fall just short of a five hundred record and just out of second place in the division.

As I mentioned the Magic lost Dwight Howard in the offseason with a trade to the Lakers but they also lost Ryan Anderson who was their best three point shooter and one of the best in the league and losing two of your top players does not normally equal success, it usually means rebuilding is around the corner and some down years are coming.

Now we get to the Bobcats and the honest question to ask is; Can they be as bad as last year? The answer from my perspective is no but they will not be much better either adding eight more wins to their total from last year to give them a displeasing fifteen for the year.

Sean Eckert Picks  @chefdj409

1.Miami Heat

65-17

2.Atlanta Hawks

47-35

3. Washington Wizards

33-49

4. Orlando Magic

30-52

5. Charlotte Bobcats

23-59

This is by far the most lopsided division in the NBA.  The Miami Heat are of course the defending champions and they will be better than they were last year.  Dwyane Wade should be fully healthy, and they have made some nice offseason acquisitions like Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis.  Now that LeBron is free of that “monkey on his back”, the Heat should explode out of the gates and never look back.

The Hawks are nowhere close to as good as Miami, but they are a lot better than the rest of the division.

Washington should improve assuming John Wall continues to develop.  They also have a lot of size with guys like Earl Barron and Emeka Okafor

As far as Orlando and Charlotte, one has to start the post-Howard rebuilding and the other just has to build towards something.  After not getting the #1 overall pick in the draft, the Bobcats look a lost franchise.  MJ would probably be their best player if he suited up right now.

More division and season previews are to come. The Southwest is up next.  Please feel free to comment here or by using #NBAonPSB on Twitter for any questions for our panel.
