After a six year hiatus, the Tigers have returned to the World Series and prepares to do battle against the San Francisco Giants. Here are some keys for the Tigers.
1. Stay focused
The Tigers dominated the Yankees in the ALCS and were “rewarded” with a long rest between their last game and tomorrows game. The Tigers can’t let games slip away. They need to stay mentally and physically prepared for the long series that will ensue.
2. Stop the hit parade
The Tigers face off against big bats such as the NL MVP favorite Buster Posey, Pablo Sandoval, Hunter Pence and the NLCS MVP Marco Scutaro. Scutaro had 14 hits in the series against the Cardinals. The Tigers pitching needs to work to make sure these batters don’t get solid contact on the ball. It’s up to Justin Verlander, Anibal Sanchez, Doug Fister and Max Scherzer to get the job done. Luckily for the Tigers, the rotation has stepped their game up.
3. Phil Coke (or Jose Valverde)
The Tigers need Coke to come up on the big stage and close games. Blowing saves just can’t happen, especially in the World Series. Coke pitched well in the ALCS and he will look to continue his impressive performance. It is still possible for Valverde to return as the team’s closer and if he does, he needs to get his stuff together. Valverde’s spot on the team isn’t looking too good right now.
