Steve Garvey broke our hearts in '84 but god I admire the greatness he showed (in retrospect, of course). HOF without Garvey is like, well, like a sham Hall without Jack Morris and Kirk Gibson. Ryno, but no Steve, c'mon! Get in the ball-game, you guys.

And speaking of the As, boy, that Charlie O. Finely sure knew how to scout, huh? Man, what a haul he made in the late 60s: Fingers, Monday, Jackson, Hunter, Rudi, Tenace, Campy, Bando, Blue, etcetera. Too bad he was cheap-skate or Oakland would've had 6 or seven titles.

Thanks for reading & the solid comment, Stevo. I'm heading over to your post now. Hope you picked the Bolts.

Steven, what a well written article. Kudos to the Giants and their fans on a great post season and a great championship! Outstanding job, to say the least. But, to paraphrase the late Jack Buck, "lets not go crazy, folks." It's been awhile since we've seen anything that looks like a dynasty on the baseball diamond.
I think that perhaps we can live on the past--in fact--we have to as baseball fans, and this may explain our fixation on stats and records.
Unless you're a Yankee fan, then you, in all probability, are used to seeing 10 to 12 year periods where your team has the proverbial snowball's chance of contending. As a Padre fan I speak from experience, but they are far from the only snake bitten club in the league; fans of the Cubs, Rockies, Mariners and Royals will all say their teams are generally anything but great, so they (we) look to the past to fill the void. When a Snickers bar just wont do it we have Garvey homering in game 4 of the '84 NLCS, or Holiday sliding his chin burnt against San Diego on the season's final day to win the pennant. We have Banks saying, "Let's play two," or Brett chasing .400.
The Giants may be on the verge of something for the ages, or they may just be on a great run, at any rate, we'll need a few more seasons to know.
A dynasty would be good for the league right now, to be sure; sort of like a vitamin B shot. If the G-men could run off three in a row like the A's of '70--'72, it just might save baseball, when the sport itself doesn't know it requires saving.
No question, though, the Giants are the power in Cali for now, and in fact, the champs of the world. :-)

Great write, thanks for sharing
