Just the Facts: Half Way Point

The Pats are 5-3 and are a half game ahead of the Broncos, Colts, and Dolphins midway through the season. What is going on? Before the season started everyone was saying this may be another undefeated Pats team on our hands. That they have, by far, the weakest schedule on the NFL roster. There are two reasons the Pats are not undefeated.

This is a level year

Half of the teams in the NFL stand at five hundred or better. It almost seems that anyone can beat anyone. Even if it comes from a blown call. Minnesota looks unstoppable and then gets stomped by Tampa, Seattle beats the Packs and Pats, the Colts beat the Pack. Even though Atlanta is undefeated it seems as if they could lose at any moment.

Arizona and Seattle stand at five hundred, the Bears and Giants look stronger than ever, and the under five hundred Cowboys, Lions, Redskins, Saints, and Bengals look like they can take out any team at any time. Eventually a few teams will pull ahead, the Pats will be one of them as well as Houston and Pittsburgh in the AFC and San Fran and the Cowboys(if Murray gets healthy) in the NFC.

Not by much

The Pats three losses have come by a total of four points. This is good and bad. One it shows that they are, pretty much, incapable of being dominated by anyone. On the flip side it brings to question if Brady still has the stuff to win the super close competitive games.

The lose to Arizona was not his fault, but the other two he had chances to go score and he failed. This is not the Brady we know from the last few years. He would go down and score as soon as he had a chance to take the lead not just perhaps at the end. Let’s hope that this will end after his explosion against the Rams, but that is not even close to a for sure thing.

These drive down the field wins are what separates the undefeated Falcons from the Pats. And what separates the Pats now from the Pats a few years ago. But this will not happen all year. Brady will have a few game winning drives, at least from a field goal, and they will string together a span of eight to ten wins and finish a top the AFC and, from there, I am very confident.

The potential Dolphins, Broncos, Chargers, Jets, Bengals, and Colts stand no chance against the Pats. With a first round bye and then say they land Denver in the playoffs they are guaranteed a AFC title game. From there it is scary with the Texans, Steelers, and Baltimore. But, half way through, I am pretty confident at 5-3 that a Super Bowl birth is in the future. However, facing San Fran, Packers, Atlanta, or even the Giants again would be the toughest test because the NFC seems stronger than the AFC this year.
