The time has come to make a tough decision. The Minnesota Vikings and Head Coach Leslie Frazier have to decide if they are satisfied with being a team in a “rebuilding” mode, or if they want to go after a winning record and a potential playoff berth. If they want the latter, Frazier has to get Christian Ponder off the field. It’s that simple. The second year QB has severely regressed during the 2012 season, and he is taking the Vikings’ ship down with him.
After the first five weeks of the NFL season Minnesota was 4-1 and sitting atop the NFC North. The past four weeks the Vikings have gone 1-3, sit in 3rd place in their division, and are currently out of the playoffs by virtue of their loss last week at Seattle. During this stretch, Ponder has been awful. Over the last three games he has thrown for only 372 yards on 38/74 passing with 2TDs and 4INTs. Those numbers look like a one game line, but that is three games combined. Against Arizona(actually a win), he threw for 58 yards. Then last week, Christian threw for 63 yards in a crushing loss at Seattle. Those numbers are simply unacceptable.
Leslie Frazier needs to start Joe Webb. Frazier knows what it’s like to be a player in the locker room, and guys like Jared Allen and Adrian Peterson aren’t thinking about rebuilding, or finishing 7-9. These guys know that this team has shown the ability to win and win now. AP didn’t work his ass off to come back from knee surgery to be part of a rebuilding effort. Percy Harvin is playing the best football of his career. If the Vikings don’t bench Ponder and he costs them a couple more games, then you will see a growing division in the locker room. Joe Webb might not be the ultimate answer, but for this season at least, Frazier needs to make the move.
We’ve seen Frazier bench Christian Ponder in the middle of a game. That happened last season in a loss to Detroit. Now the decision is more serious. Will he pull him in the middle if a season. He needs to. For the other players in the locker room, for the fans, and maybe even to protect his job, Leslie Frazier needs to make the switch and start Joe Webb.
