A tie is not a loss, nor is it a win

The Rams and the 49ers play to a tie. This is the first tie in the NFL in four years. Both teams had an opportunity to win the game in overtime, but both kickers missed their field goals.

The Rams got off to a hot start, scoring 14 points in the first quarter. Sam Bradford was hot, Steven Jackson was rolling and the defense protected the lead until the 4th quarter. Sam Bradford was 26/39 for 275 yards and 2 touchdowns. Steven Jackson rushed for 101 yards, on 29 attempts and 1 touchdown. The defense held the 49ers offense to 7 points until the 4th quarter, in which they gave up 17 points.

After losing Alex Smith early in the game, to a concussion the 49ers would rely on backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Frank Gore pounded the Rams and Kaepernick used his feet to engineer a comeback and tie the game up at 24 with a rushing touchdown late in the 4th.

On the opening play of the overtime period, Sam Bradford connected with Danny Amendola on a 80 yard pass play. It looked as if the Rams were in position to win this game with a touchdown in overtime. But the play was called back, due to a illegal formation penalty by the Rams.

The 49ers offense marched down the field and put themselves in position for a game winning field goal.  The very reliable David Akers missed a 41 yard field goal attempt, giving the Rams another opportunity to win. Rookie kicker Greg Zurlein gets another opportunity to be the hero for the Rams as he attempted a 53 yard field goal. The kick is up, the kick is good, the kick is denied due to a delay of game penalty. Zurlein would then attempt a 58 yard field goal, which he misses wide.

For the Rams the most that could come out of this game is a moral victory, but the the 49ers who were trying to extend their lead in the NFC west, a tie is like a loss.
