Adrian Peterson claims he is still not 100% healthy.  That is bad news for the rest of the teams on the Vikings’ schedule, because AP is running wild as he heads in to a bye week.  The Minnesota Vikings were desperate for a win heading in to Sunday’s game with the Detroit Lions.  For the first time in weeks the Vikes showed a sense of urgency, and maybe more importantly, the team didn’t make costly mistakes.  Instead, they hopped on the back of a guy known as “All Day” and rode him right over the Lions, 34-24.

AD was magnificent.  He ran for 171 yards on 27 carries, including a 61 yard touchdown run halfway through the 4th quarter that sealed the victory.  Peterson is really an unbelievable runner.  He runs like Walter Payton or Earl Campbell, but with better breakaway speed.  Like the aforementioned greats, Adrian looks to deliver punishing hits to defenders who get in his way, and he was doing just that all afternoon on Sunday.  Vikings’ QB Christian Ponder simply had to play mistake-free football, which he did.  Ponder played his best game in a month.  He threw for 221 yards and 2 TD’s on 24/32 passing, and of course the most important stat; ZERO INT’s.  Minnesota’s offense showed the balance that had been lacking the last few weeks, and guys like Kyle Rudolph got back in the mix.  All of this happened even with Percy Harvin on the sideline in street clothes.

The Vikings’ D also showed up on Sunday.  While they did give up a big game to Calvin Johnson(12 rec, 207 yds, 1 td), they were able to control everybody else.  Detroit was completely unable to run the ball, ending up with a mere 60 yards for the game.  The Lions threw the ball an amazing 71% of the time.  It is awfully hard to win that way.

So now the Vikings head in to their bye week on a positive note.  They have beaten the Lions twice this season which makes them 2-0 in the NFC North.  Last season they were 0-6 in the division.  Adrian Peterson is continuing his unbelievable comeback and when he runs like he did on Sunday, Minnesota can compete with anybody.  At 6-4, the Vikings are on the edge of the playoff hunt and they have their fate in their own hands.  In the final six weeks of the NFL season, they play the Bears twice and the Packers twice.  So rest up gentlemen, the home stretch is going to be rough.
