Georgia looks to keep Championship hopes alive against Tech on Saturday

With both teams in contention to earn the top spot in their conference titles, there is much more riding on this match-up besides the heated rivalry on the “last Saturday of November” and the tradition that this game is so known for.

In their most recent meetings, the Bulldogs lead Georgia Tech in the series, winning 10 out of their last 11 meetings. With the team that Georgia has compiled this year, the odds should be in their favor yet again. Sitting at No. 3 in the BCS, Georgia controls their own destiny at this point, needing to beat Tech on Saturday, followed by a win against a tough Alabama squad in the SEC Championship, to possibly clinch a position at playing for the National Championship title.

Although the Bulldogs are favored on Saturday and after a slow start to the Yellow Jacket’s season, Tech would like nothing more than to ruin Georgia’s National Championship opportunity and run away with the pride of winning between the hedges.

Coming into their last regular season game, the Bulldogs have only suffered one loss and have shown a lot of promise on both offense and defense, since dropping their match against South Carolina. After finding balance offensively, led by freshman running back Todd Gurley and quarterback Aaron Murray, Georgia should be able to make big plays against a sluggish Tech defense. To beat Georgia, the Yellow Jackets will have to find a way to stop Gurley.

Currently, Gurley already has over 1,000 yards rushing and sits at sixth in the nation with 6.3 yards per carry among rushers with 160 attempts or more.

Defensively, Georgia has been on target since taking their win at Florida. After shutting down Georgia Southern’s offense last week and holding them to just 14-points, the defense proved they are more than prepared to tackle another attempt at Tech’s triple-option offense. Going into Saturday, Georgia will keep their focus on Tech’s Orwin Smith and Tevin Washington. As the Yellow Jacket’s main wing-man, Smith leads the team in both rushing and receiving.

Although Tech will put up some points on the board with their triple-option, Saturday should be Georgia’s game to lose. The Bulldogs also have the home field advantage to play in their favor, allowing them to be less likely to face an upset.

Kick-off is set for Saturday at 12 p.m. on ESPN.
