Clutch layup gives Pistons third win of season

With the game on the line, Brandon Knight made a key layup with 7.8 seconds left in the game to lift the Pistons to a 91-90 victory against the Toronto Raptors.

Knight had a solid day with 16 points while making six out of eight field goals, but the Pistons were led today by the “twin tower” combo of Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond. Monroe scored 19 points while pulling down 11 rebounds and dishing five assists. Drummond came off the bench, scoring 13 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. The development of Andre Drummond is essential to the success of the Pistons. If Drummond consistently puts up the numbers he put up today, the Pistons will be closer to making the playoffs.

The rest of the team had mixed results. Tayshaun Prince had the hot hand with 16 points while adding seven rebounds. On the contrary, there was the rest of the backcourt not named Brandon Knight. Rodney Stuckey continued to struggle with his shot with eight points. Stuckey made only two of nine field goals today. The Pistons need Stuckey to pick up his game as he was to be the primary source of points for this team, but his struggles with his shot have relegated him to a smaller role. Current starting shooting guard Kyle Singler, who naturally plays small forward, didn’t put up any significant stats. Will Bynum did absolutely nothing in 22 minutes off the bench as well. This is a problem that needs to be addressed at upcoming practices.

On the opposing side, Andrea Bargnani made it rain, dropping 34 points on the weak Pistons defense. Kyle Lowry returned to the starting lineup and put in 19 points of his own and five assists. Lowry’s start put Jose Calderon on the bench. Calderon had the hot hand while Lowry was nursing an injury. The Pistons, at least, did a good job locking down on DeMar DeRozan as the swingman only scored five points today.

The Pistons resume action today against Carmelo Anthony and the New York Knicks at 1:00 PM ET at Madison Square Garden in New York.
