Georgia Dominates Georgia Tech in 42-10 win

Fans may refer to their meeting as a game of “clean old-fashioned hate”, but Saturday’s match saw the Georgia Bulldogs cruise to a dominating 42-10 win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets between the hedges, to end their regular season at 11-1.

Georgia’s victory also keeps them in the thick of earning a spot in the BCS National Championship game, if they can walk away with a victory against Alabama, in a very hyped and media frenzied SEC Championship match next weekend. Head coach Mark Richt is also now 11-1 against Tech, which is the first 11-1 streak for either side in this series.

Quarterback Aaron Murray was the focus of the weekend’s win, becoming the first quarterback in SEC history to earn 3,000 yards in three consecutive seasons.

Saturday’s game definitely belonged to Georgia, as they were able to easily put the game away in the first half. Putting up a quick seven in just over a minute on their opening drive, the Bulldogs consistently moved the chains on quick drives against an unsuspecting Yellow Jacket defense. With a pair of touchdown runs from Todd Gurley, combined with one from Keith Marshall and Rhett McGowan, the Bulldogs were up 28-3 going into halftime.

“We came out with a high tempo on offense and I’ve got to credit the line for opening up holes for me today”, said Gurley.”That allowed me to get going.”

On defense, the Bulldogs were on target from Tech’s opening drive, led by Baccari Rambo with a fumble recovery at the goal line and a pick for a 27-yard return that set up Georgia’s final drive before the half.

After the half, and to any Tech fan’s horror, the story was pretty similar. Continuing their breakdown of Tech on both sides of the ball and putting up another 14 on the board, the Bulldogs stretched the lead to a point that gave the Yellow Jackets no chance at a possible comeback. Georgia’s Marshall earned his second touchdown of the game on a 17-yard run, along with Jay Rome on a 24-yard strike from Murray, to settle at a 42-3 lead by the end of the third.

Under Georgia’s thumb and holding to a field goal as their only score of the game, Tech finally made it to the end zone late in the fourth on a nine-yard run from David Sims. Doing no further damage, the Bulldogs held on for the win and the rights to keep the coveted Governor’s Cup in their possession.

With their 42 on the board today, Georgia has scored a total of 456 points this season and set a new school record.

Murray ended his day going 14 of 17 for 215 yards and no interceptions. Gurley led on the ground offensively, with 97-yards and two touchdowns.

Playing one of his best defensive games of the year, Alec Ogletree walked away with a career high of 15 tackles.

“The coaches really got us ready and this group of seniors really took control the game”, said Ogletree. “We just really wanted to come out and just play hard today.”

Sims led Georgia Tech with 71-yards rushing and one touchdown.

Next week the Bulldogs will be in action at the Georgia Dome for the SEC Championship showdown against Alabama.
