There are games when it seems like one particular team is just destined to win. The win today for the Rams was one of those games. The offense played very marginal and the defense bent, but did not break. In my pregame blog, I stated that Kaepernick gave the Rams the best chance to win and he did just that.
The major difference between Kaepernick and Smith is that Kaepernick is not a game manager. He is a big play quarterback and is not seasoned enough to handle and protect a lead. He single handedly let the Rams back into the game. The Rams first capitalize off Kaepernick in the third quarter, when the Rams defense chased him into the end-zone and forced him the throw the ball out of bounds, without the ball reaching the line of scrimmage, resulting in a safety. Those 2 points represented the first points for the Rams of the day.
The second gift to the Rams from Kaepernick came on an option play to Ted Ginn Jr. The option pitch from Kaepernick sailed over Ginns head and while Ginn attempted to retrieve the ball off the ground, Janoris Jenkins jumped on the ball. Not only did Jenkins fall on the ball, he managed to roll his way into the end-zone, accounting for the Rams only TD score of the game. Kaepernick accounted for 8 of the Rams 16 points.
The game came down to the kickers again. David Akers hit a 50 yard field goal, putting the 49ers up by 3. But the rookie, Zurlein would not be topped, he kicked a 53 yard field to tie the game and send in into overtime. After both teams failed to score on their first possession, it came down to a real sudden death next score wins overtime. David Akers had a opportunity to be the hero for the 49ers and get the pesky Rams off the 49ers back. David Akers missed the 51 yard game winning field-goal, wide right. With 30 seconds to go in the game and the possibility of another tie game between these two teams, Greg Zurlein lines up to kick the game winner for the Rams. The kick is up the kick is good, just barely staying between the uprights. And the Rams upset the 49ers and proved that Kaepernick is not the answer.
