EMU Is Pressed Into Submission

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The first 12 minutes of the first half, Eastern Michigan University basketball team was living the dream.

The dream ended and the nightmare began for the Eastern Michigan University on the floor of the Carrier Dome.

The fourth ranked Syracuse University defeated the Eagles 84-48 and added one more victory on the road for 900 wins for Syracuse University basketball coach Jim Boeheim.

Eagles’ coach Rob Murphy and his team controlled the tempo and controlled the scoreboard early but then the inexperience and the youth of the Eagles entered the game.

A former assistant coach and mentor to Murphy, Boeheim saw enough and decided to attack the Eagles with a full court press and quickly erased an eight-point deficit into a double digit lead and the Orange never looked back and coasted for the rest of the game.

“We haven’t tried to press that much, I don‘t think that a strength of ours,” Boeheim said. “I don’t think we can press a little bit and they have a couple of young guys. They made mistakes early. They got a little shell-shocked against the pressure and we got some turnovers.”

“We worked on it but until,” Murphy said about facing the press. “But until you get in the situation and you’re in this place and you see those long, active hands, you just can’t prepare for it.”

The turnovers created by the Orange defense created too many indecision and sloppy play by the Eagles. Syracuse finished the first half with a 27-5 run and took a 35-17 at the halftime.

The Eagles were 0 for 6 from behind the three-point line and made just 6 of 22 in the first half.

Both teams return to the court and started the second half but the hole that the Eagles turnovers dug was too deep and the offense struggled to get out of that hole.

Poor shooting, poor passing and the inability by the Eagles to box out on the defense end created too many offensive rebounds and 20 second chance points for the Orange.

The Orangemen out rebounded the Eagles 50-37, including 20 boards on the offensive boards that led to what seemed like a lot of second chances for Syracuse offense.

Eastern Michigan University guard Derek Thompson scored 18 points to lead the Eagles and forward Glenn Bryant added 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Murphy is concern that the Eagles need to find away to keep the ball, the Eagles made 24 turnovers that Syracuse turned into 31 points.

Eastern Michigan University will also have to improve under the basket and on the baseline, they let a lot of points go by not being able to convert close to the basket.

In the paint the Eagles only scored 22 points in comparison to Syracuse scoring 48 points under the basket.

Eagles center Da’Shonte Riley blocked six shots but missed two dunks and made just one shot in eight tries. His six blocks is just one short of an Eastern Michigan University record.

The next game for Eastern Michigan University will be played Saturday afternoon Dec 8, 2012 at the Convocation Center in Ypsilanti against Purdue University, the tip off is schedule to start at 2 p.m.
