Atlanta turns the table on the Giants

Today, the Atlanta Falcons got their revenge after routing the New York Giants with a 34-0 shutout.

Atlanta also delivered the Giants first shutout in 16 years.

After watching such a dominating performance in all three phases of the game, it is time to give credit where credit is due. Yes, the Giants made several mistakes and missed key opportunities to stay in the game, but the Falcons were relentless in their execution and played an almost flawless game on all sides of the ball. If this Atlanta squad continues to play with this drive and this focus, there is no denying that they will be the team to beat come post season play.

This afternoon, quarterback Matt Ryan was back on target, proving why fans refer to him as “Matty Ice.” This is the Ryan that comes in and controls the game with a cool, calm and collected approach, especially when his line gives him the time to control the game in the pocket. Completing 23 of 28 passes for 270-yards and no turnovers, Ryan saw a near perfect day.

Offensively, Atlanta was led by Julio Jones, who stepped up once again with six receptions for 74-yards and two touchdowns.

On the flip side, the Falcons defense was simply able to get to quarterback Eli Manning, who was only 14 of 26 for 161-yards. Leading on defense, Asante Samuel was on fire with one interception, two defended passes and a tackle. Atlanta controlled Manning most of the day and earned two interceptions before the half. To make matters worse for New York, all three of their fourth down conversion attempts slid into the “failed” category. This time, the Atlanta defense was not fooled by the passing game, they played it.

After today’s win, the Falcons are one step closer to locking in that first round bye and seem to be optimistic about where they stand as far as the playoffs are concerned. Playing one of the most complete games that fans have seen in a while, the Falcons looked like a team primed for Super Bowl talk.

This week, the Falcons prepare to head to Ford Field where they will take on the Detroit Lions.
