The Minnesota Vikings have what every team, every kid, every fan dreams about. All they have to do is win today and they are in the playoffs. On top of that, the team they face is their biggest rival, the Green Bay Packers. Oh yeah, in case that’s not enough, Adrian Peterson has a chance to break Eric Dickerson’s single season rushing record. Yes, the Vikings and their fans have plenty to be jacked up about.
Common sense would say that if AD rushes for over 200 yards Minny would win, but he did that in Green Bay and the Vikings still lost. No, the key to Minnesota winning will be how much pressure they apply to Aaron Rodgers. Jared Allen and Co. will dictate how this game goes. If they can hit Rodgers early and often, Minnesota will have a good chance to win.
The Vikings’ offense is the wild card in this game. AP will run….., and run…, and run again, but Christian Ponder has to complete at least a few passes to take some of the pressure off of Peterson. Adrian is almost certain to crack the 2,000 yard barrier, and has a realistic shot at breaking Dickerson’s record, but that alone will not insure a Minnesota victory. The Vikings, and especially Ponder, have to protect the ball. A few weeks ago Minnesota had a chance to win at Lambeau Field, but the QB made some horrible decisions in the red zone and the Vikings lost.
For the first time in three years the Vikings have a game that really matters, and it’s at home. I expect AD to run for at least 150 yards, though I am not sure about the 208 he needs to break the record. The Packer’s defense is not very good against the run, but 200+ yards is a lot against anybody. The more important mater is whether or not Minnesota will win. They can, but will they. As much as they hand the ball to AP, the game will come down to Ponder and the decisions he makes. That is a scary concept to anybody familiar with the Vikings.
