LEXINGTON, Ky. — It started out good!
A three point shot by Eastern Michigan University’s forward Daylen Harrison found the mark but then it just got ugly for the Eagles.
The University of Kentucky Wildcats took the Eastern Michigan University Eagles out behind the wood shed and spanked the Eagles 90-38, in front of a crowd of 22,135 inside Adolph Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky.
“We ran into a real good Kentucky team this evening. We knew it would be tough,” Eastern Michigan University basketball coach Rob Murphy said after the game. “We started the game well, we hit a three and had them down three zip in the first position.”
University of Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari did not have to get a technical foul to get his team motivated or to make a point with official instead the Wildcats on the floor did all of the talking with their actions against the Eagles.
“I like the big team!” Calipari said. “This defense that they play is tough defense. It is something a zone that is effective and (Rob) Murphy does a good job with it.”
The Wildcats had five players with double figures, Wildcat sophomore forward Kyle Wiltjer led all scorer with 18 points.
Calipari used a full court press in the first half with good results against the Eagles but did not have to use it in the second half as the Eagles could not find the basket or the points.
The Eagles could not convert on offense and that made the game lopsided and an ugly game to watch.
The Eagles only shoot 24.2 percent from the floor for the game. Eastern Michigan University took 62 shots against the Wildcats.
Eagles’ junior forward Glenn Bryant led the Eagles with 10 points and Austin Harper led the Bench Brothers with seven points.
The Eagles made 19 turnovers that the Kentucky offense turned into 25 points.
In the first half, Eastern Michigan University committed 12 turnovers, the offense shot a pathetic 21.4 percent from the floor shooting the ball 28 times and only scoring just six baskets and including 1-for-8 behind the three-point arc.
Eastern Michigan University did deploy the 2-3 zone defense and Kentucky went to work inside the zone defense and scored 25 points in the paint but the full-court press just confused the Eagles and the young point guard Jalen Ross. The miscues just added up for the Eagles.
Ross scored five points but he made six turn overs and just two assist, Murphy said after the game the work will continue and Ross will get better.
The Wildcats shot 51.7 percent for the game and after a poor showing at the foul line Saturday afternoon against the University of Louisville. Calipari worked with his team and his team to improve and teach the mechanics of shooting a free throw-the Wildcats finish shooting 75 percent against the Eagles.
Eastern Michigan University will face another talented point guard Saturday afternoon at the University of Massachusetts, the game is schedule to start in Amherst, Massachusetts inside the Mullins Center at 2 p.m.
